Show SEEKING TO IMPROVE STATE FMIDS Association Will Ask Legislature Leg-islature for Appropri-, Appropri-, ation. The Utah State Fair association, and particularly its president, J. G. McDonald, Mc-Donald, plan to malte a vigorous fight during the coming session of the legislature legis-lature to secure an appropriation commensurate com-mensurate with the proper upkeep of the fair grounds, an investment of $250,-000, $250,-000, for tho care and maintenance of which there has been no provision maclo by legislatures for the past four years. "With the assistance of a well-known architect an estimate has .been made up as to the amount of money needed to put the fair grounds on a par with fair grounds in other states. According to President McDonald, what is needed most is au educational and woman's building, the cost of which is put at $30,000; next, in point of importance is a machinery and automobile building with a fixed valuation of $10,000. Other needs are a comfort station, $7500; swine pavilion, $3000; drainage, $2500; insurance, $2000; care of buildings and grounds, $1000; premiums and maintenance, mainte-nance, $30,000. The statement is also marie by President Presi-dent McDonald that an appropriation was asked for during the last two sessions ses-sions of the legislature, but without avail. He is optimistic as to the consideration con-sideration to be expected from the coming com-ing legislature. "It is four years since there has been a penny appropriated for the care and maintenance of the Utah Ptate Fair froundB, " said Mr. McDonald yeater-ay, yeater-ay, "and just, prior to that time we were given $5000 to care for a quarter million investment covering -forty-four acres of land. And not a cent, mind you, since that time. We have asked for an appropriation for a woman's building for the simple reason that the woman's 'building' there now is tucked away in the manufacturers .building and a rather difficult place for women to locate, lo-cate, and in addition is out of date and not at all sanitary. "During the last fair we had not the proper accommodations for an automobile automo-bile exhibit, a fact to be deplored in a growing and prosperous state like Utah. Then, again, when farmers a.nd rangers bring their live stock to exhibit ex-hibit in the fall there is not a place for a human being to Bleep and many times the exhibitors have been compelled com-pelled to sleep with their hogs. As to drainage at the fair grounds there is no such thing, and no provision is made for the care of the race track, the cutting cut-ting of grass, the spreading of einders or gravel to aid in the upkeep, or even the care of the buildings. "However, we feel that the new administration ad-ministration will see the matter in the right light, and we are building our hopes on Governor-elect Bamberger, whose business ability is bound to assert as-sert itself." |
