Show I'llW MADDEN IS CQRVICTEO 6! JURY After Long Deliberation, Punishment Pun-ishment of Alleged Grafter and Pals Is Fixed. CHICAGO. May 29. After forty-six hours of almost const:mt wrangling, tho jury in the case of Martin ("Skinny") Madden, M. J. Boyle and F. A. Pouchot, labor leaders, charged with striko grafting, graft-ing, today brought in a verdict of guilty, fining each of the defendants 500. . I The long delay is .said lo have been due to the inability of the twelve men to find a common ground of punishment. punish-ment. Madden almost collapsed when the verdict was read. TTc was scarcely able to speak, but finally managed to Etate that ho considered the verdict a bad thing for unionism. Reports of attempts fo influence the jury in behalf of the defendants were rife about the criminal court building during the afternoon. State's Attorney Attor-ney Wavman visited the grand .iury- room and later a large number of subpoenas sub-poenas wore issued. The case has been bitterly contested. For years there have been rumors of irregularities in the calling and settling of strikes in Chicago. Last winter the rumors took concrete form and the indictment in-dictment of Madden, Pouchot and Boylo followed. The men were brought 'to trial on an indictment charging that conspirnev to extort, and the extortion of the sum of $1000 from Emil Klicks, through George S. Andres, an agent, in order to settle a strike on the plant of the Joseph Klicks company. It was alleged al-leged in the slate's tostimony .that Andres, having received tho ' money from Klicks. left it on a desk for Madden, Mad-den, the latter choosing this method as a safeguard. Pouchot and Bovle are said to have assisted in securing the money. Arguments on a motion for a new trial will be heard June 11. i |
