Show IISAL LAKE HORSE Mary F, at Good Price, Beats Booger Red and Other Fast Ones. MAYOR PLACES FLORAL WREATH ON WINNER Track Ts Sea of Mud, and Five Favorites Fail to Make Good. Surprises were in stores for everybody every-body at the horses races at tho Fair grounds track Saturday al'ternoon. The deep mud proved too much of a handicap handi-cap for the favorites, and three second choices and two outsiders led their fiplds under tho wire. Ked Leaf was , the only favorite of tho day to win. ' Booker Red, heavily played to win the Decoration Day $1000 handicap, ran outside the money, Mary F fairing the honors in a sonsatioual sprint down tho stretch by a length from "Work Box, nnd Salvage" laking the show from T3oogcr Red hy two lengths. The handicap was the prettiest race of the season, and four of the five gallopers swung into the stretch almost abreast. The 4o00 people were on their feet shouting for their favorites. Ilere and there a faint shout could bo heard for Mary F, probablj' from tho few that bet on the winner because fhe -was the first horse entered on tho-Ecore tho-Ecore card. Mayor Bransford placed a floral wreath over the winner's neck and made a little speech from the Ridges' stand, praising tho victor, especially es-pecially because Mary F is a Salt Lako liorse, "and is owned by George liobi-60n, liobi-60n, who is well known hero among the horsemen, and who was the owner of Julia A, one of the best local harness har-ness horses several years ago. TJobi-son TJobi-son had asked to withdraw nis horse, believing that he had no chanco to win, nnd also lacked confidence in Jockey Thomas, but the boj- rode a fine race. Booger Rod opened 11 to 20 in the betting and closed 7 to 10. Mary F ivas held at 4 and 5 to 1, Work Bos going about the same, -while Salvago closed in tho bolting ai 6 to 1. i'H Starter Dwycr had an off day.
