J?rom a source of authority it is learned that Governor Hughes is satisfied -with tho reports he has received in regard to tho conduct of racing at Belmont Park. It is assorted at Albany that tho roports circulated that Assistant District Attorney At-torney Klder had interviewed Governor Hughes on the question of procedure, when racing came under his jurisdiction, jurisdic-tion, had no foundation, that the governor gov-ernor had not seen nor heard from tho assistant district attorney. Those in close touch with Governor Hughes are pronounced in expressing the attitude of t lie governor regarding the outcome of the Agnew-Hart bill. They say the law is there, that the courts Jiave interpreted it, and so long as the associations and the public, live up to the decisions of tho courts, no further action will be taken. Any infraction of tho law will be immediately imme-diately looked into. This seems to mean 't hat as the objectionable features of horse racing have been eliminated, the sport will continue, and presumably grow upon the new foundation that is now being built. This is cheering news to those who arc much concerned in the welfare of tho turf, ami will do a greal deal lo bolster up the weakened who are loaded load-ed up with fear and trembling at the slightest rumor of pending evil. It should also eneournge the associations asso-ciations to be ever alert in prevent ing any attempt to step over the boundary of the law by any of their patrons. Certain matters the courts have decided de-cided to be permissible on tho courses, ft is lo be observed and to expose those who. for selfish reasons, endanger endan-ger the sport. Kaeing has an opportunity oppor-tunity to be built up again so that j it will be lasting. The help of every .one is needed to raise il to a standard that, will keen it from further attack, cither from the political battering ram or the reform element. |
