He caused the revelation revela-tion on that subject to be burned, and when he voluntarily came to Nauvoo and resigned himself Into the arms of his enemies, en-emies, he said that he was going to Carthage to die. At that time he also said that IF IT HAD NOT RISEN FOR THAT ACCPUKRD SPllilTVAT, WIFI5 DOCTIUN1D he would not have come to that. Vol. 1, page -I. The oulv thing- that now concerns us is: Was Iho revelation absolutely binding and irrevocable in its command lo practice polygamy? And there is no better evide'nee as to its meaning than the revelation. After a rambling and almost incoherent introduction, the Mormon God said to Joseph Smith: Therefore prepare thy heart to receive re-ceive and obey the instructions which 1 am about to glvo unto you: for nil those who have this law revealed unto them Ml'ST OI3 ICY the same. For. behold! I reveal unto you a new and everlasting covenant, and if ye ubhla not that covenant, THICN AUIC Ylfi DAMNICD. etc. And as pertaining to tho new and everlasting covenant, it was instituted for tlie fullness of my glory: and he that re-cclveth re-cclveth a fullness thereof, Ml'ST AND SHALL abide Ihe. hiw (of polygamy), or ho SHALL liE DAMNED, saith the Lord God. And let mine handmaid. Kmma Smith legal wife of the prophet, receive all those I wives! that HA VIC been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are pure and virtuous before nic; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Loid God. Omitting one paragraph, tho "Lord Gnd" is alleged lo have threatened his "handmaid'' with certain destruction "if she abide not in my law." Sufficient Suf-ficient has been quoted toprovo' the absolutely binding forco of tho polygamy po-lygamy revelation on all those to whom Ihe law was revealed. But a short digression di-gression is hero permissable. It appears ap-pears from tho revelation that Joseph was in the habit of catechizing his plural fiancees on the subject of their "purity' and that either Joseph or the Mormon God had a slight suspicion that some of them had falsely testified, testi-fied, else why lit rent en them with destruction? de-struction? Date of Revelation. The revelation, of which four paragraphs para-graphs oulv have been quuted, is dated July 12. 1"S4S. But Klder Roberts, iu his " Uise and Fall of Nauvoo." page 114. affirms that as earlv .as IS:; 1 the prophet received an inkling from the Almighty that (he doctrine of polygamy polyg-amy was divine. The statement of Elder Roberts is verified by Joseph F. Smith. And there are numerous hints tliat I he -Mormon prophet practiced polygamy po-lygamy inuuy years before tho public promulgation of the doctrine. Indeed, Oliver C'owdery. one of Joseph's right-hand right-hand men. as early its 1S"7, was es-cominuniealed es-cominuniealed for charging that. Joseph Jo-seph Smith was guilty of adultery, and which, in 1S1", was sanctified by divine di-vine permission to practice it in the face of those conditions, it is related that Ihe prophel hesitated to enter into the "new ami evorlnsting coveuautv" The following from page 9 70, edition of SSI , autobiography of Eliza K. Snow, one of Joseph Smith's plurals, illustrates the divine pressure that was brought to bear on the prophet to induce him to surrender his inherited ideals of sexual purity: . He Joseph Smith 1 knew the voice of God he knew the command of tho Almighty Al-mighty was to go forward lo set the example and establish celestial plural marriage. Yet, the Prophet hesitated hesi-tated and deferred from time to time, until an ANGEL OF GOD STOOD H1C-FOKIC H1C-FOKIC HIM WITH A DRAWN SWOPvD. and told him that, unless he moved forward for-ward and established plural marriage, his priesthood would be taken away from hlin and he would be destroyed. This testl-mon testl-mon he not only bore to my brother. (Lorenzo Snow), but also to others. Many of tho brethren were also reluctant re-luctant to enter the new order of marriage, mar-riage, while others rejected it. and. of course, are "damned." Apostle John Taylor, according to his sintemenl. was one of those who hesitated, lie relates re-lates how, one morning, he was on horseback and met. Ihe prophet, a short distance out, front Nauvoo. After the morning salutations Apostle Taylor was about to pass, when Joseph called: "Slop! Look here, I hose things (polygamy) (polyg-amy) that 1 have spoken of must be fuliilled, ami if they are not entered into right away, tho keys will be turned." And Apostle Taylor surrendered. Binding Force- Polygamy Revelation. The recognition of the absolutely binding force of tho polygamy revelation revela-tion on the saints is vigorously enunciated enun-ciated in tho following from the "inspired" "in-spired" lips of Joseph V. Smith, the present chief vicegerent of the Mormon God: I understand the law of celestial marriage mar-riage to mean that every man in this church, who has tho ability ;o obey and practice It In righteousness and will not. SHALL B12 DAMNED, f say I understand under-stand It to mean this and nothing less. and I TESTIFY TN THR NAM 10 OV JKPITS CHRIST that it docs mean that. Deseret News, September 7, 1S78. In 1860 the United States concluded that it would measure arms with the Mormon God, and to that end passed a law providing certain penalties for polygamy in those territories over which the federal government, had exclusive jurisdiction. But Uncle Sam was too busy .iust then in the effort to stamp out the "twin relic of barbarism" in the oast to bother with the smaller "relic" iu Utah. It should bt: noted that while Uncle Sam was too bu.S3' to tackle poh'gamy ihat the Mormon Dei 13 was supreme in Utah. But after the lapse of fifteen years, or so. Uncle Sam took off his coat and proceeded to try conclusions with the .Supreme ruler of Utah. The prophets fell back on the plea that, polygamy po-lygamy was a part of their religion and that, as such, the Unitted States had nothing to do with it. The mouthpiece of the Mormon Doity held that: Tho Latter-day Saints 'do not consider this question of monogamy or plurality within the purview of the state, but purely pure-ly an ecclesiastical matter governed by divine law and administered and regulated regu-lated under divine authority. Deseret News, January 10. 1S70. Hundreds of the saints went to the penitentiary, while other hundreds took to the "underground" for safety. Some of the saints began to weaken and suggested sug-gested a surrender. But the Mormon God,- through his prophet, John Taylor, who was then president of tho churcht u recti the saints to continue faithful as he had theretofore told them to stand in Missouri, while he. the Mormon Deity, gave his "enemies" a pyrotechnic display dis-play of infinite power. Bossing Polygamy. In fact, the crisis was such that President Taylor had a revelation on the matter of tho divine prerogative of bossing polygamy. The essence of the revelation was thai, thereafter, no elder could hope for promotion in the church unless he became, a polygamist Seymour B. Youm. one of the first seven presidents of the eeventy, immediately imme-diately vindicated his right to promotion promo-tion by taking a plural. Bishop John Sharp "was haled .before the court for polygamy, and had the eood sense to see' that the Mormon Deify was losine his grip, and promised to thereafter obey the laws against, plural marriage.- For that act of surrender. Bishop Sharp was ininicdialelv relieved of his ecclesiastical eccle-siastical position. Tho dilemma of tho prophets was increased in-creased by the disfranchisement of nil nolygninists, and which enabled the "Lord's enetnies" to secure municipal control of Salt Lake City, the especial domicile of the vicegerents. Also, the Mormon church was disincorporated anl its property escheated to the federal uoverninent. The author of Joseph Smith's revelations was beaten to .1 "frazzle," and freely conceded defeat. The public announcement of the surrender sur-render came during the October conference, confer-ence, 1SP0. The prophets, thirteen of them, for ihemselvcs and their followers, follow-ers, promised President Harrison that they would thereafter obey the law against plural marriago and plural cohabitation, co-habitation, II had been a battle royal, with 10 to 1 on Uncle Sam, who finally landed a solar plexus, and the Mormon God weut to the mat and was counted out. Tn this, short discussion it is not per missible to relate the story of b ay'j prophets subsequently hetrayed llftt tideuec of Utah Gentiles, of V'&m Harrison and the people of the ttwftef f States.
