Show TRADE, BUSINESS, AND FINANCE. The week has brought two more welcome wel-come storms to Utah, as If to make assurance as-surance doubly sure that there would be .plenty of water the ensuing season. The hills were already pretty well packed with snow, and this addition, on the top of the well-packed drifts and Elides, will make a supply seldom excelled ex-celled since the records have been kept. The movement of the farmers In furthering fur-thering the Government's reclamation proposition for their benefit, has been surprisingly slow, and unexpected objections ob-jections and claims are sprung. The farmers of this valley do not come to the front at all In the spirit shown by the farmers of the Salt River valley In Arizona, who made an open and even class of all the claims and water rights, thereby at onco coming down to business busi-ness and getting their request granted immediately. It Is to be hoped, however, that the way will be easier now that the farmers understand that tho whole matter rests with them, and that if they do not ask for the Utah Lake improvement im-provement to be mode, and present a practical working basis, the Government Govern-ment will take Its benefits and Its money mon-ey elsowhere. Tho railroad situation continues un-dlmmed un-dlmmed in Its brightness. The San Pedro Pe-dro road the Salt Lake route has been practically finished to Riverside, and the people there are preparing to celebrate cele-brate next Saturday, the opening of train service with Los Angeles. This will be an Important step in filling the gap, and the work Is going on no less diligently on this side, beyond Cali-entes. Cali-entes. The Western Paclfio Is disowned by Georgo Gould, but It Is evidently a llvo project nevertheless; his good reasons given why ho does not back this enterprise enter-prise would be Just as strong on the other side, and would make him its backer. However, the main thing Is the road itself, and we believo fully In Its vitality, and that as speedily aa Is reasonably-practical It will be finished to this city from Son Francisco. The Moffat road, building to this city from Denver, Is making due progress, and makes itself heard from favorably from timo to time. It will enter the scenic line Held tho ensuing summer, and will be able to compete with the best of them In this direction. The mines of the State continue to put forth a most satisfactory stream of riches. The tonnage is greater than ever before, and the permanence of the ore bodiea, together with the new strikes, Insures the continuation of the great supply. The mines of the State wero never before in so good a condition, and never before did they stand so high In the public estimation, not only at people of tho whole country. The smelters of this valley are also doing their full part in the great bullion product of the State. The American Smelting company Is arranging for its now and Immense copper smelter, and tho United States company has increased in-creased Its lead furnaces, and will con-tlnuo con-tlnuo to Increase them. The Utah Copper Cop-per company's plant, put Into commission commis-sion last Sunday, with Its great plans for Increased capacity, and the Tampa company's plant, recently put in operation, opera-tion, are splendid examples of the tremendous tre-mendous importance and vitality of this great industry In this valley. Trade throughout the Stato is on an entirely satisfactory basis, and the outlook out-look for tho season Is exceedingly cheerful. cheer-ful. With plenty of moisture for the farm and range, and for all Industrial operations, with the mines producing richly and abundantly, and the Immediate Imme-diate prospect of moro and needed railroads, rail-roads, Utah Is In the front rank of prosperity pros-perity and hopefulness. In this city, business is good, and tho bank clearances are well up to the highest high-est marlc Trade Is fair for the season, and the opening of tho spring demand will soon make It very brisk. The excellent ex-cellent outlook In all branches of productiveness pro-ductiveness cannot help making the business situation very strong. The outlook out-look for building tho ensuing season Is especially promising. In Ihe country at large, Bradstreet reports re-ports Irregular conditions, owing to bad weather and floods. The Iron situation is unsettled, the coke supply Is Insufficient, Insuffi-cient, and a soft coal strike is threatened threat-ened In the central fields. Railway earnings show a falling off of 5 per cent in January. Collections are fair to good. Failures are about normal In number and values Involved, , Dun reports that business continues to improve, despito singularly unpro-pltlous unpro-pltlous weather conditions. Tho opening open-ing of spring trade is delayed, yet retail re-tail traders are making extensive preparations prepa-rations and building activity has begun. be-gun. Railroad earnings In February were 2.2 per cent below those of last year, bad weather restricts traffic, the Iron and steel industry has made progress prog-ress in tho right direction, and prospects aro brighter. Tho International Mercantile agency reports trado tho most broken and irregular ir-regular since tho year began. The U. S. Steel corporation has options on forty thousand tons of Bessemer steel, which steadies tho market, and a Southern pig concern hae sold Its output for two months ahead. These sales help the situation. sit-uation. The bank cloarlngs for the week, compared with tho corresponding week of last year, show a decrease in New York of. 28.S per cent, and of 5.C per cent in tho cities outside of New York, an nggregato decreaso on all of 18 J2, per cent, which undoubtedly represents the depression of tho speculative Interest. The Now York bank statement, Issued yesterday, shows a material Increase In loans, a greater in deposits, a substantial substan-tial Increaso In reserve required, and otherwise lo not much changod. The statement had no particular effect on the market. Tho country is sound and wholesome, it has Immenso wealth and resources, and stands unrivaled In Its Industrial, financial and commercial growth and attainments. It is on a sound basis, with brilliant prospects. |
