Show POLYGAMOUS STATISTICS. The rate at which polygamy Is dying out was approximately given by President Presi-dent Smith in his testimony yesterday. In 1SD0, at the time of President Woodruffs Wood-ruffs manifesto, there were 2451 polygamous families. In October, 1899, there were 1543 remaining. Now there are but 897 of such families, not much over one-third as many as fourteen years ago. This statement fully proves two things; first, that the Mormons keep specific and accurate records of this matter, a thing that has been frequently fre-quently denied under oath In the Utah courts; and second, that the polygamous polyga-mous condition Is not disappearing as fast as some fervent protestations would have led one to suppose. Besides, Be-sides, It takes no account of tho new polygamous marriages In foreign porta, on tho high seas, nor through tho for-getfulnesra for-getfulnesra of men that they wero already al-ready married. It also conveyu the indisputable information, in-formation, that cannot be especially welcome cither In Canada or Mexico, that a number of polygamists aro moving mov-ing their families ''beyond the confines of the Republic." It Is a most sugges-tlvo sugges-tlvo little bit of statistics. |
