Show A five-month national search for a director of the ne University of Utah Marching Band has ended with the appointment ef Gregg Hanson, director of bands at Davis High School in Kays-ville. Kays-ville. ! THE appointment will be effective July 1. Mr. Hanson will also become assistant, professor of music. The 32-year old director was the unanimous choice of a search committee representing represent-ing the music department, athletic department, alumni association, associated students and university relations rela-tions office. DR. CHARLES Bestor, chairman of both the music department and the search committee, says Hanson was selected after an "exhaustive search" and was the one candidate can-didate whom it was felt could "adequately serve all the diverse interests involved." "He has been director of bands at Davis High School for the past seven years." said Bestor. "and he has established es-tablished an extensive follow ing throughout the state as a result of his outstanding work there." ONE OF Hanson's great strengths, says the U chairman, chair-man, is the "breadth of his musical background and interests." Although the appointment is effective July 1, Hanson will begin informal work with the music department immediately. immedia-tely. DR. BESTOR says "The addition ad-dition of the marching band to an already strong wind and brass program will add a significant sig-nificant new dimension to the University of Utah music program, particularly in the area of music education." THE WINNING applicant received his B.M. degree in music education from the University of Michigan in 1967 and his N.M. degree in wind instruments from the Univer- i GREG HANSON sitv of Michigan in 19M. He had been band director at Davis High since 1969. The decision to revive the Ute marching band was made jointly last fall by Pres David P. Gardner, the alumni association as-sociation and university relations rela-tions office in response to widespread campus and community com-munity interest. THE FORMER marching band, which was discontinued in 1971. was completely student funded until the Associated As-sociated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) voted to eliminate its budget. The new band, which will make its debut in Rice Stadium next fall, will be supported sup-ported by gift funds. |
