Vernal's professional chimney sweep, Bill Wheeler, is right at home poking his brushes down a tall chimney to free the accumulation of soot. The advent of the wood stove has revived this almost extinct profession. Chimney sweep trade makes come-back A new business in the Vernal area, starling up to meet the demand created by the increased use of wood-burning stoves, is Willy Winckle's Chimney Sweeps. The business is operated by Bill Wheeler of Jensen and offers complete inspection, cleaning and repairing of residential and commercial chimneys. According to Wheeler, the increased use of wood stoves and fireplaces is causing chimneys to clog up and become lined with soot and creosote. This situation creates a fire hazard and wastes fuel, pointed out Wheeler. By regularly cleaning out the soot and creosote the draft is improved and the danger of a chimney fire is decreased. Even though chimney sweeping is associated with dirt, Wheeler says he keeps things clean. He started his chimney cleaning business only this season. During the past few weeks he said he has been very busy. For the past five years Wheeler has been in the floor covering business in the local area and prior to coming to Vernal he worked seven years in this business. Wheeler says it takes about one and one-nalt hours to clean the normal chimney. He and his wife, Colleen have three children. |
