Bowden downed Val -inks of Morgan in the first round and feated Robert Kunzler, Lehi, 11-6, in e second round. Brent Young of Wasatch nipped Steve ult of Union for the first place title at 6 pounds by the score of 3 to 2. Gault cisioned Quinton Larson of Lehi, 15-7, the second round. Billy Thacker, Wasatch, garnered the 1 2 pound crown when he edged Union's j 'ian Hamilton, 9-6. Hamilton downed rdon Miner of Lehi in the first round, j id pinned Intermountain's Bautista in J e second round. Lehi's Greg Carter toppled Union's ivell Young, 9 to 2, for first place in e 138 pound class. Young downed Cougars captured first place in the Region 9 Wrestling Tournament in Roosevelt, Friday. Kevin Rich of Morgan in the first round and blanked Phil Gardner of Wasatch, 9- 0. The Cougars' John Brown had a 4-1 lead going into the third round in the 145 pound championship contest, but Dave Cummings, Wasatch, nabbed a reversal rever-sal and a two-point near fall for a 5-4 win. Brown edged Corey Thayne, Lehi, 10- 8, in the second round. Union gained two more second places at 155 and 185 pounds. Zane Pentz, a defending state champion from Morgan, nipped Union's Frank Winn, 3-1, for the 155 pound Crown. Anthon Nelson, Union, had a 4-2 lead going into the third round, but Pat Sullivan of Wasatch pinned the Cougar tussler for first place in the 185 pound class. Brent Cundall, Union, 119, nipped Intermountain's In-termountain's Marill Calniptwea, 5-3, for third place. Steve Fisco, 105, placed fourth when he was toppled by Lehi's Mark Grant, 9-3. Bruce Boren defeated Joe Rupnicki of Intermountain for third place at 167 pounds. The first and second place wrestlers will compete in the 2-A State Tournament Tourna-ment in Richfield, Friday and Saturday. Satur-day. Wrestlers from Union, who will compete in the meet, are: 98-Farrell McCook, 112-Steve Bowden, 126-Steve Gault, 132-Brian Hamilton, 145-John Brown, 155-Frank Winn, 167-Bruce Boren, 185-Anthon Nelson and heavyweight-Danny Farnsworth. Boren advanced to the tournament when he defeated Lehi's Wade Fox in a true second match due to a default. Lovell Young of Union was defeated in a true second match. A true second match takes place when the second place and third place winners have not met before in the tournament. "We are just real proud. The first place victory was a real team effort," said Dennis Toland. Brad Ripple, Wasatch, blanked Morgan's Kelly Wilson, 7-0, for the 105 pound crown. LeRoy Down, Lehi, downed down-ed Troy Bonner, 9-5, for first place at 119 pounds. |
