Vernal Junior High podiefs flrsff and second places Vernal Junior High's A team captured cap-tured first place in the Vernal Invitational Invita-tional Tournament, Saturday, with a total of 287 points, but the big news was that Vernal's B team collected second se-cond place with 136Va counters. Following Follow-ing Vernal's A and B teams in the tournament tour-nament standings were: Green River, Wyoming, third, 131 ; West, fourth, 106 'A; Roosevelt, fifth, 99'; Rock Springs, Spr-ings, sixth, 88; Castle Rock, seventh, 60 and Rock Springs' freshmen, eighth, 52V2. "This is the first time that Vernal's A and B teams have won first and second place, in a tournament. The kids did a super job, and I was tickled to death with them." stated Vernal Junior High wrestling coach, Leon Smuin. "There is no question in my mind that this is the best wrestling team we have ever had at Vernal Junior High." Eleven Vernal Junior High Panthers, Jerry Haslem, 155; Pat Jenkins, 145; Jody Young, 138; Bucky Tingey, 132; Neldon Smuin, 126; Kent Boren, 119; Wilbert Woody, 112; David Gentry, 105; Mike Smith, 75; Larson Caldwell, 100 and Dave Giese, 95 pocketed first place crowns. Mike Smith, Vernal A team, toppled Vernal B team member, David Gurr, 6-1, for first place. Smith also downed Templeman. Dave Giese, Vernal A team, decisioned Vernal B team member, Gary Murray, 8-2, for top honors. Giese also downed Kevin Colling Coll-ing of Castle Rock and John Aposotolope of Green River. Larson Caldwell, Vernal, blanked Roosevelt's Jeff Samuels, 5-0 in the finals. Caldwell also toppled Tom Cuzette of Castle Rock and Bobby Bird of Green River. David Gentry, Vernal, thumped Randy Ran-dy Pitt of Rock Springs, 17 to 2, for first place. Gentry also thumped Scott Brauer of Castle Rock and Randy Turner. Wilbert Woody, a Vernal B team member, nipped Torr McCurdy, Vernal's A team, 7 to 2, for first place honors, The match was tied at 2-2 with 20 seconds left, but Woody reversed McCurdy, Mc-Curdy, gained a three-point near fall, and won 7.2. Woody also defeated a Green Riber tussler, downed Troy Carter of Roosevelt and Paul Conger of Castle Rock. Kent Boren, Vernal, garnered first place when he blanked Mervin Glines of Roosevelt, 6-0. Boren also defeated David Anastos of Green River and Brad Dickson of Vernal. Nelson Smuin, Vernal, Ver-nal, nabbed first place when Frank Doherty of Castle Rock was disqualified. dis-qualified. Smuin was awarded a penalty penal-ty point late in the third round, which - cut Doherty's lead to 5-4. Actions by Doherty delivered the title to Smuin due to a disqualification. Smuin also downed down-ed Willie Tryon of West and Roger Mecham of Roosevelt. ' Bucky Tingey, Vernal, acquired first place when he pinned Roosevelt's Ken Anderton with eight seconds left in the first round. Tingey also defeated J.D. Poowegup of West and Bobby Barnum of Rock Springs. Jody Young. Vernal, blanked Dean Stout of Rock Springs, 12-0, for the 138 pound first place crown. Pat Jenkins, Vernal, pinned Kerry Robertson of Green River with 38 seconds left in the third round for first place honors. Jenkins also toppled Mike Portalatin of Castle Rock and Brandon Nettick of Rock Springs. Jerry Haslem garnered two titles in his battle with Ken Winn of West. Haslem pinned Winn in only 17 seconds for first place. Haslem also garnered the trophy for the fastest pin. Haslem also defeated Steve Collins, West and Adam Robles of Green River. Mike Moss of Rock Springs nabbed the 65 pound crown when he pinnea West's Craig Phillips in the second round. Shane Frost of West placed first in the 70 pound class due to a 2 win over Vernal's Ryan Siddoway. Bryan Friel of Rock Springs blanked ICnug Funk,9-0, for first place in the blocxly 80 pound contest. Green River s Jeff Stacy nabbed the 85 pound crown when he blanked Vernal's Brent Mornl, 10-0. Darren Heslep of Green River captured cap-tured first place in the 90 pound class by blanking Roosevelt's Bardett Fausett, 7-0 Jim Lockhart of Rock Springs pinned pinn-ed Vernal's David Weeks in the third round for first place in the heavyweight class.
