West Jordan's Gene Fullmer will be at the boxing matches in Vernal, Friday, February 15. Fullmer was the world's middleweight champion in 1957, and from 1959 to 1962. Fullmer, who is the president of the Utah chapter of Golden Gloves, will also serve as a referee in the Vernal bouts. Harry Miller remarKea that purpose of the benefit show is to establish an amateur boxing club in Vernal. There will be state, regional and national champs cha-mps from Utah and Colorado at the fights in Vernal. The local Vernal Elks' Lodge chairman for boxing is Jack Voyles. Fees will be charged for ringside and general admission seats. Miller said that there are 30 active boxing clubs now, and that kids from the 80-90 pound class up through the open or senior heavyweight classes are receiving training. Gene Fullmer went to Boston with about two dozen fights under his belt and Tony Montya Jr. may have had more fights at 13 years of age than Fullmer had when he ended his fighting career after losing the world championship. |
