Show III II n ir iiiiiin.i.ii i i n li mi I nil .11 Snow forced the Uintah Utes to have three wrestling matches in a row in Vernal last week, and the Utes emerged as the winner in all three contests as they outscored fheir opponents, Murray, Mur-ray, Jordan and Green River, Wyoming, Wyom-ing, 133 to 31. Bad weather moved the Uintah-Murray Uintah-Murray battle from January 10 to January 29, and once again snow caused caus-ed Uintah and Murray problems as the contest had to be changed from January 29 to January 30. The snow caused Uintah to have three home contests con-tests in a row on January 30 against Murray, January 31 against Jordan and February 1 against Green River, Wyoming. Having three meets in a row didn't deliver any serious problems to the Utes as they thumped the Murray Spartans, 62-6; toppled the Jordan Beetdiggers, 34 to 12 and downed Green River, Wyoming, 37 to 15. The final meet in the giant homestand for the Uintah Utes was a meet against Green River, the defending state champions, cham-pions, 'from Wyoming. Uintah jumped out to an early lead when Brett Brown, 98, gained a pin; Ron Horrocks, 105, pocketed a superior decision and Foston Chivers, 112, toppled an outstanding outstan-ding wrestler by the name of Gary Dallman, 11-2. The Wolves won three matches in a row to tie up the contest at 13-13, but the Utes picked up five victories and a tie in the final six matches to win the constest by the score of 37 to 15. Two of the many outstanding matches mat-ches gained by the Uintah Utes in the meet with Green River, Wyoming, were turned in by Kay Smuin at 155 pounds and Billy Bedell, 167. Steve Miller is one of (he top wrestlers on the Green River team. Miller nabbed first place in the 1979 Vernal Tournament and placed second se-cond in the 1980 Vernal Tournament. However, Billy Bedell of Uintah completely com-pletely outwrestled Miller in the 167 pound encounter in the Uintah-Green River dual meet. Bedell was ahead for most of the match, but a slip in the final seconds enabled Miller lo gain a reversal rever-sal and a 2-2 tie. Kay Smuin had to fight for all his points in the 155 pound match against Green River's Mike Beck. The match was tied at 0-0 after one round of action, but Smuin gained his winning points on a reversal in the second round. "Mike Beck wrestled a real good match, and I just got lucky and got a move on him. I used a hook and roll in order to gain a reversal," staled Kay Smuin. "The last time we wrestled I beat him by one point in overtime." Beck gained a takedown and a three-point three-point near fall for a 5-0 lead in the first round in the Vernal Tournament. Smuin gained a reversal and a three-point three-point near fall in the third round for a 5-5 tie, which forced (he match into overtime. Smuin pocketed a reversal for a 2 to 1 win in overtime. The Leon Smuin family had a fun time watching tussling action in Vernal, Ver-nal, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and there weren't any frowns coming from the Smuin group as sons Kay, Randy and Neldon Smuin, were undefeated in wrestling action last week. Kay Smuin and Randy Smuin won all their matches against Murray, Jordan and Green River, and brother Neldon Smuin, 126, nabbed first place in the Vernal Junior High Tournament, Saturday. Satur-day. "He (Dan Mahaffey of Green River) had me scared for a liltle while, but the I got an arm bar on him and scored two points. I scored most of my points in the second round," stated Handy Smuin. Smuin nabbed a reversal, two point near fall and three point near fall in the second round. "If we hadn't been going two-a-days it would have been a lot tougher." "We got three wins that we needed. They were important wins, and we showed good aggressive wrestling to the fans. I was pleased with the way Foston Chivers, Kay Smuin, and Randy Smuin have been wrestling. Henry added, "Uintah is strong at !)ll Brett Brown, 105 Ron Horrocks, 112 Foston Chivers, 1311 Matt Hacking, 1 15 Handy Smuin, 155 Kay Smuin and heavyweight Ken Cobbs. The top wrestlers from Box F.lder are Stewart Richards, 105; Malt Smoot, 132 and Jim Hell, 145. Pleasant Grove's top wrestlers are Hurry Fraier, 112 and Craig Cook, 1311. Davis is strong in the middle weights from 132 to 155. They are also strong at the heavyweight spot with Jon Warden. Jordan is strong at 132 -Scot t Gessell, 1311 Jeff Welch, 155 Mike Meldrum and 167-Hal Cooper." The 3 A State Tournament is set for February II, 15 and 1(1 at the University of Utah and once again the city of Salt Lake will be invaded by the faithful funs from Vernal. |
