The inadequate funding has handicapped each program. Water Safety Many certificates were issued to swimmers during dur-ing the 1977 season by authorized volunteer Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. Helping may take the form of financial l loans which must be supplied on notice from Grand County Red Cross funds. If no funds are available, the national office is solicited for funds. Jim does not act on his own, as information provided pro-vided sometimes may require verification from authorized physicians, clergymen, law enforcement, enforce-ment, etc. Reports must be complete and filed with the local chapter and also the national office. All cases are confidential and service is free to the individuals involved. Jim is on call 24 hours a day to help servicemen. Floyce Wells is also on call on the weekend. The average case takes about 2 hours and numerous phone calls as well as the ever present paper work. All cases require followup calls to make sure that all is well with the servicemen service-men and to see if additional addi-tional help is necessary. First Aid Program Accidents can happen to anyone at any time. Often death will occur before a doctor can be reached unless someone knows the steps to prevent it. During the past year many people have attended atten-ded local first aid classes to gain the skills needed to save a life. The Grand County Chapter now has several instructors qualified quali-fied to teach first aid. Classes are available for all ages and may be as short as 8 hours or as long ' as 50 hours. The only cost is a small fee to pay for books and materials. The goal is to have at least one first aid trained individual in each family. If you need first aid training, call First Aid Chairman Jerry Epperson Ep-person at 259-7589. Disaster Program The disaster program organizes temporary relief for people who have suffered suf-fered from a disaster. The local Red Cross chapter works in close association with Grand County Civil Defense organization. The Moab area is very fortunate for-tunate that no major disasters dis-asters have occurred in the area recently, but nevertheless, the Red Cross under the chairmanship chairman-ship of Vern Osmond, is prepared to help in case of one. The Grand County Chapter is kept running smoothly through the chapter chairman with help from the secretary-treasurer secretary-treasurer Juanita Wiseman. Wise-man. Anyone wishing to make a contribution may do so by mailing then-check then-check to Grand County Red Cross, 590 Taylor, Moab, Utah 84532. |
