Show UNCLE DIES Kenneth and Howard Silliman received word this week that their uncle, E. W. Bruington had died at Pomona, California at the age of 105 years. Mr. Bruington came to Green River in the early peach boom days, and he and Sam Wilson cleared and leveled land on the other side of the river which is still in the Silliman family. They took out great trees, some of which remained in the eastern part of the river where it ran around Silliman's Island before the channel changed in i 1925. Wilsons lived in a little log house, which is still standing, and Frances was born there. The Bruingtons built a house, which is still standing, also, but is in bad repair. Mr. Bruington was born in Illinois March 17, 1872 and grew up in that state, and Kansas, going to Paunee, Oklahoma when he was a young man. He returned to Kansas and went into the banking business. He came to Green River early in the century, then went on to California, where he grew fruit and nut trees and established a chicken ranch. He had three sons and a daughter: Paul with whom he lived in Pomona, Donald of San Gabriel, Dean of Claremont and Helen Gale of Oceanside, New York. He was hale and hearty up to the last few months of his life, and was very alert and interesting. Many of the oldtimers in this area will remember the family. |
