Show Fire Dept. trainingeducation programs show real results The Moab Fire Department embarked em-barked on an intensive training program and public education effort several years ago, and it has paid off in substantially fewer fires and drastic cuts in fire losses. Dick Hammer, information officer offi-cer for Moab's Volunteer Fire Department, told the Times-Independent there were 97 fires in 1975 with estimated dollar loss during the year of $285,745. That is $2,946 per fire. In 1976 there were 41 fires with dollar loss of about $126,000; and in 1977 there were 38 fires with a loss of about $62,000. The 1977 average loss is $1,632, or nearly half the average loss of two years earlier. Hammer reported that last year there was an average of 45 men in the department. They meet weekly with the exception of the Christmas and New Years weeks. Last year these 50 meetings called for 3,012 volunteer man hours. Of the total hours in meetings, 1,744 were spent in volunteer training. In addition to this, there were 13 extra meetings attended by some of the volunteers, for a total of 48 hours of seminars and special training. Time spent in actually fighting fires in 1977 totaled 736 volunteer man hours. The average number of volunteer firemen responding to these fires was 23.4.
