Show windsong: A Great Pilot Project Experience ... Windsong 1977 was a pilot I project for 13 girls, 2 young adults I and 4 adults on a 2 week trip preparing for Utah's Council sponsored opportunity set up for July of 1978 when 78 girls from all over the United States will discover at first hand the wonders of the (state of Utah. --Home --Home Hospitality with families 1 in Salt Lake City was first on the agenda. A synopsis of National Parks in Utah and a sensitivity and nature hike was given at Timpano-gas Timpano-gas Cave to help the girls to get to know each other. First stop for the night was at Jericho Sanddunes with an exciting "critter race." Never participated in a critter race? Try it, you might like it. All you need is a circle drawn on the sand and two stink bugs being cheered and prodded on k.v a bunch of screaming excited girls! Next on the agenda was the Shakespearean Festival at Cedar City for a taste of classical theatre sndsome insight into its workings. 2on Park included lots of hikes and w evening with a Junior Troop from Zion. Some of the girls 'fsembled mountain goats but some of the adults were definitely 1 not rock climbers. At each National Park Visitor Center, a program was presented by a Ranger and included a tour of the Visitor Centers. Every Park allowed the girls to do a flag raising ceremony which was quite an impressive sight for the tourists. Bryce Canyon saw everyone trying to rise at 5:20 a.m. for a sunrise Scout's Own at Sunrise Point. This was a highlight that was all girl planned and very well done. Showers at the Bryce Camper Store were 50 cents for 5 minutes. Have you ever run out of water right in the middle of washing your hair? Onward to Hole in the Rocks Home for a tour which is just out of Moab. An interesting camp along the Colorado River complete with a cave available for those who wished to sleep inside with the bats. Some girls planted themselves on top of a huge mountain of rock and some just found a spot and collapsed. The day spent on the raft floating the Colorado River with North American Ameri-can River Expeditions was a real climax for a beautiful trip. Our biggest challenge was getting back in the rafts after getting out to float in our life jackets, singing "Peace I Ask of Thee, Oh River." More hikes were enjoyed in Arches National Park and the evening sun put on a show of spectacular colors as it set. Closing ceremonies were at Camp Cloud Rim where we were greeted with a Luau and no water for showers; but who could care at this point? Everyone was thinking about the past 12 days and how they could use and share this experience; the new friendships they had made and when they would see each other again. What a magnificent setting to share our feelings about the trip and plan for the future of WINDSONG 1978! From the blazing sandstone pinnacles of Bryce Canyon, the red rock valleys of Zion Park, the Colorado River's spectacular scenery, scen-ery, to Camp Cloud Rim high above the clouds in Utah's Alps, "Utah Windsong Beckons." "Utah's Windsong" will be a 1978 National Opportunity available avail-able to 78 girls from throughout the USA. Girls will begin arriving in Utah on June 15 and are registered as of this writing from 27 different states with only 4 chosen from Utah Council. This is an opportunity for girls from other states to see the wonders of Utah. ""J V |
