Show Relief Society Educates the Total Woman Contributed by Helen Tranter, Relief Society President, Moab, Utah Stake Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints One hundred thirty-six years ago, on March 17, the organization called he Relief Society was established by the LDS Church for the strengthening of womanhood. The organization of 18 women, under the direction of the Priesthood continued to grow until now Its membership is about 1,129,135, and is world-wide. Approximately 740 women belong to the Relief Society organization here in the Moab, Utah Stake which includes Moab and Green River. Our youngest member is 15 years old and the oldest member Is 92. Approximately Approxi-mately 155 women serve as leaders and teachers with many others serving on various committees. We meet weekly and thrive on the lessons, sharing experiences and knowledge, the companionship and association with others. As a college graduate, I acknowledge the Relief Society lessons as an extension of my education. The first lesson each month is our Spiritual Living lesson. During this time we study the scriptures with the desire to gain knowledge and wisdom. The second lesson, Home-making Home-making Day, consists of a lesson on "Provident Living," and participation in mini-classes, which help us to become better homemakers and wives. At noon we enjoy a lunch, and visit with our friends and neigh-' bors. We take turns preparing the meals. The third week we have a choice of two classes, Social Relations and Mother Education, Educa-tion, and very often It's difficult to decide on which class to attend. The fourth week Is also exciting because we tour a country through music, film and study. The Relief Society holds occasional socials or special events and sometimes husbands are also invited. Three very special events are upcoming. On March 21 we will have a special meeting at the new church at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. i . .. ) If J ; Lucille Johnson, of Orem, Utah, will be guest speaker. Sister Johnson was the Assistant to ; the Commanding General of the Armed Services in Europe, head of Family Affairs, and she's presently on the President's Council concerning Juvenile delinquency. She travels extensively throughout the world lecturing, and will have just returned from Alaska, and will be leaving for Japan a day or two after her trip to this area. Everyone Is invited to attend this special meeting. April 21, the Stake Relief Society Is sponsoring spon-soring a DinnerDance at the L.D.S. Stake Center. Tickets will be $10 a couple, which includes dinner, a program and a dance. The music will be furnished by "The Classical Brass." On Saturday, April 22 will be "Woman's Play Day," at the Stake House under the direction of Patty Copeland. This day is for the women who like to play volleyball volley-ball for fun and exercise. j Participating in Relief Society Is like com- : ing into the sunshine after a dense fog. The leaders of the Relief Society in our Moab Stake have not been professionally trained for their calling (or Jobs), and therefore, we do make mistakes occasionally, but we try to learn from our experiences and work harder to try to overcome our weaknesses. Every woman in our community Is welcome wel-come to come and participate and glean from the mountain of knowledge available to us. It's a great and fulfilling feeling to be a part of such a great women's organization as the Relief Society. We're truly liberated when we follow the teachings of Our Heavenly Father. As Stake Relief Society President, under 1 the direction of Stake President, Cleve Raymond, it has been a great experience for me to work with, and for, all of the talented and special women that live here in Moab Utah Stake. |
