Show Moab journalism students completed in State Meet By Margie Snyder Five Grand County High School students attended at-tended the University of Utah Friday, March 10, for state journalism competition. com-petition. The students that attended were primarily members of the Mograndah yearbook staff and one first year journalism journal-ism student. Mary Walker and Margie Snyder attended at-tended the competition in the field of newswriting. Erica Nelson competed in the broadcast journalism area, and Alan Day and Daniel Bretzke attended as photographers. Journalism teacher and yearbook advisor, Mrs. Ruth Williams, also attended. at-tended. The seminar involved many well-known Salt Lake journalists who spoke to the different groups of high school journalists. The broadcast journalists were addressed address-ed by television broadcasters broad-casters Terry Wood of KUTV and Spencer Kinard of KSL. The photographers photo-graphers were addressed by many professionals on the staffs of the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News. The aspiring news-writers news-writers were spoken to by several writers on the staffs of the major Salt Lake newspapers. All the journalists attended a general session and heard Shelly Thomas, KTVX anchor woman. The competition for the photographers consisted of covering one of the region tournament basketball basket-ball games that took place at the U of U special events center. The news- writers and broadcast journalists were assigned to cover a special press conlerence that was held by Dale Van Atta, a renowned reporter on the Deseret News pinpoint team of investigative reporters re-porters who has covered such big Utah stories as the polygamist group violence vio-lence and the Tooele army depot controversy. The journalists then prepared their stories and submitted submit-ted them to be judged. The results of the judging will not be available to those who competed for a few weeks. All those students that attended the seminar enjoyed en-joyed an unique experience experi-ence in mingling with other aspiring journalists from throughout the state but the learning was even more inspiring. |
