Although May 1st is feast of Venerable Philippine DUCHESNE, each day should remind us of her since our County bears her holy name. She was born in Grenople, France on August 28, 1769. She became a Sister of the Visitation early in life. During the French revolution she was forced home, but she ministered to the sick and the needy. In 1804 she entered the newly established community of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1818 she. was allowed to go to the Missjons. Mother Madaline Marie Barat, her superior, super-ior, sent her to America, first to New Orleans, then Mississippi, and finally Saint Charles, Missouri was her goal. There she lived and died. The first Altar west of the Mississippi Mis-sissippi dedicated to the Sacred Heart was theirs at the Convent of Forissan. She labored among the Indians of Sugar Creek, Kan. They named her "The Woman Who Always Prays." On Nov. 18, 1852 she died. Her venerable life was full of devotion and the love of God and neighbor. Since the beautiful French name of Duchesne is so dear to us it is fitting to honor her who bore it.
