Show o)avecis By THOMAS B. EVANS Uintah Basin Soil Conservation District News The calendar tells us that winter is drawing to a close, and many farmers, no doubt, are planning their spring activities. In some cases this work includes in-cludes constructing small dams for reservoirs or stock ponds, land leveling, and other earth-moving earth-moving jobs. . A word of caution do' not attempt to begin such jobs too early in the season. When the ground is frozen, earth moving costs rise considerably, and for dams, it is impossible to get good compaction by putting layers of frozen soil into the dam. Also, a good job of land leveling cannot be attained while the ground is frozen or muddy! Weigh the two facti, increase in cost, plus poor results re-sults and it adds up to waiting until the weather conditions are right before tackling any one of these types of jobs. SCS Conservationists John Strang and Gilbert Horrocks, of Duchesne, Du-chesne, met with six neighborhood neighbor-hood groups the past week in Boneta, Duchesne, Hanna and Bridgeland. The farmers and ranchers in these groups have asked for technical assistance from the District in land leveling, lev-eling, irrigation system layout, and stockwater development. , . --SCS- Grant Chugg, SCS engineer, has completed the design for the siphon to be constructed this spring in the O. T. Hicken ditch near Mrs. Bertola's place be- low Tabiona. This structure will afford complete control of irrigation water, with provision made rfor saf e by-passing -,of flood Waters, and winter drainage drain-age of the siphon. The design follows the ideas of the ditch company directors on a small engineering basis. SCS Conservationist Grant Parrish and PMA representatives held a joint meeting at Jensen last Thursday at which 28 farmers were present. The relationship between the Uintah Basin Soil Conservation District, PMA, and the Soil Conservation Service was explained. ' Slides were shown by Mr. Parrish illustrating illustrat-ing good irrigated pastures and land leveling. SCS Mr. Parrish also held a meeting meet-ing with a neighbor group of farmers in Tridell. Various conservation con-servation practices and the advantages ad-vantages of solving conservation conserva-tion problems by working through the Uintah Basin Soil Conservation District were discussed. dis-cussed. Conservationist Don Nielson met with a neighbor groxip of farmers in Altonah. The conservation conser-vation practices that each farm- i er planned to do this year were ! discussed. |
