Show It's About Time Everything Mow Lighter Eating ' By V ICKIE MATHESON Eating is not as much fun as it used to be. Do you remember when you ate heavy casseroles and chocolate cho-colate cake for dinner? Or when you went out to dinner and ordered baked potatoes instead of quiche? I'll bet there are a lot of people out there who would love to walk in a bar and order a regular beer. But the problem with today's eating is that it is all supposed to be "light." FROM COLAS, to beer, to salad dressing, everything every-thing you eat today has a little "light" stamped on the label. I liked the days when you ate meat and potatoes and gravy for dinner and then apple pie for dessert-and you never felt obligated to say, "Just a small piece please." People don't even eat much meat anymore, not the "red" kind anyway. It used to be that when someone invited you over for a barbecue they meant hamburger hambur-ger or steaks, now they will more likely serve chicken chick-en or fish. People don't always worry about red meat; if you could afford it, you ate it. PEOPLE are more fancy about what they eat today. to-day. I should confess that when I want a glass of water I still go to the kitchen sink for it. But I know many people who wouldn't think of drinking anything any-thing but Perrier or some other kind of sparkling or spring water. And people don't eat noodles anymore. any-more. They eat "pasta." And they make their own S : : pasta with their 90 dollar pasta makers. Salads have also changed with time. Not long ago chefs used to prepare the dinner salad and you just told the waiter whether you wanted it smothered with thousand island or blue cheese dressing. Now you make your own with broccoli, green peppers and mushrooms, and it is best if you top it only with a light splash of lemon juice. IT USED to be that going out for a hamburger meant grilled and greasy. Today people go out for gourmet burgers served with avocados and alfalfa sprouts. They also eat cole slaw instead of French fries. I like to go out for ice cream cones or other frozen confections that are swimming in hot fudge and nuts. I have friends that won't even look at a frozen dessert de-ssert unless it is yogurt with a wheat germ topping. These same friends think that apples and cheese constitute dessert. But to me, apples are for snacking and cheese is used for thick sauces poured over vegetables. NOBODY eats waffles and pancakes anymore. Even if they did they would eat them dry instead of smothering them with butter and thick syrup. I think we are going to see the extinction of many food items if this "light" trend continues. Things like potato chips, cookies and chocolate bars. Unless of course, there are a lot of you out there like myself. I eat light when I go out with friends, but continue to consume the good stuff in the privacy of a closet. |
