The original arch, built in 1917, Vas first damaged in 1959 when a backhoe ran into it. The, original stone columns were then replaced with steel posts in 1961. THE ARCH was again destroyed des-troyed in 1977 when a large truck ran into it (see photo). After five more years, residents resi-dents had donated enough money for a new arch which was finally put up last Thursday. The new Val Verda Arch (above is substantially different in design from its predecessors. It has been left open in the middle to allow large cranes and trucks to travel up 3100 South without repeating history. Five years ago (below), the arch was accidently destroyed for the second time in its 66 year history. It was first damaged in 1959 and replaced two years later. Davis County Commissioner Commission-er and Val Verda resident Harry Har-ry Gerlach has been in charge of the new arch restoration. He said it is very unlikely that this arch will be damaged. Thick steel poles support an all steel frame covered by steel panels, painted to look like stone. "EVEN AT the curb, the arch is 15 feet high which should be adequate clearance for anything. It will also withstand with-stand a wind load factor of 125 to 150 miles per hour," said Com. Gerlach. Large plaques decorate iiiiM iiiwiMjii i - una mill each side of the arch. Written on the north side plaque is a short history of the arch and the founder of Val Verda, V. A. Bettilyon. Mr. Bettilyon was a real estate developer who first subdivided the Val Verda area, putting up the first arch as a landmark for his development. de-velopment. THE SOUTHERN plaque names all those who contributed contri-buted to the new arch and lists the committee members who worked on its restoration. Ribbon cutting ceremonies III'M l Mill I III l III I II 1 -l - are planned for Saturday, July 23 at 10 a.m. in the intersection of 3100 South Orchard Drive. "Though anyone is welcome, all past and present Val Verda residents are especially invited to attend," said Com. Gerlach. THE CEREMONY will include in-clude a half hour program consisting con-sisting of short talks and a musical selection written especially espe-cially for the arch restoration. During the ceremony, hundreds hun-dreds of balloons are planned to be released to float over the Val Verda area. |
