Show Vikes Take Region, Now Eye State Viewmont defends state 4A cross country title today at Sugar House Park at noon. By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports SALT LAKE CITY -- To no one's surprise the Viewmont boys cross country team dominated domin-ated the region meet held at Sugarhouse Park last Wednesday to claim their third region championship in a row. WHEN ALL was said and done the Vikings had a team score of 34 which easily defeated second place Davis who had 55 points. East was third with 67 followed by Highland, Bountiful Boun-tiful and then Woods Cross. Going into the meet Viking coach Lynn DuBois predicted that his top five runners would place in the first 12 in the region meet and those words turned out to be right on as the fifth Viking to cross the finishing line was in 12th place. AS EXPECTED the individual battle turned into a two man battle between Mike Allen and Reese Kidman, both of Viewmont. The race was close through the 2.7 miles around the park but in the end it was Allen who won the battlewith a time of 15:49. Kidman wasn't far behind his friend though as he crossed the line in the fine time of 15:53. Matt Kimball of the Darts was the third runner run-ner to complete the course followed by Curtis Jones and Greg Taylor both of East. Shane Fishburn of Highland took sixth place followed by a great effort from Darren Tuttle of Woods Cross who was seventh. JOHN KIMBALL, the younger brother of Matt, took eighth spot for the Davis crew with a couple of Vikings, Con Fox and Mike Nelson, Nel-son, finishing ninth and tenth respectively. Following the 1 1th place showing of a runner from East, John Pratt of the Viewmont team closed out their scoring with his 12th place. Although pleased with another region title Viking coach Lynn DuBois still feels his runners run-ners didn't run that well at the region meet and that they better run better this week in the state meet if his Vikings are to defend that title. "Some of our kids got beaten by some other schools that they have beaten before. I don't know what the deal was but we just didn't run as well as we have in the past couple of weeks." THE TOP TEN individuals and the top three teams from this region meet qualified for the state meet which will be held this Wednesday, Oct. 26, beginning at noon on the same Sugar-house Sugar-house Park course. "The IA race will begin at noon and then each classification will run first the girls and then the boys. I would guess that the 4A race will begin around 2:30 p.m. But people should get there earlier in case the races are faster" DuBois noted. ALL YEAR the Vikings have been aiming at the state title and the region title, now they have the region crown and they are going after their second straight title. According to various va-rious coaches throughout the area the Vikes will be the favorites in this year's event. |
