Vikes Intercept At The Pass By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL - Viewmont's Wade Bevans intercepted four passes, it could have been six, but those in attendance of last week's Bountiful-Viewmont football game will remember re-member the interception by junior linebacker Billy Bagley more than all of Bevans thefts. SEE IT WAS Bagley's interception that stopped a great last minute effort by the Braves, on the Viking one yard line, to seal the Vikes 21-14 victory over their rivals. It appeared in the fourth quarter that the Vikes were cruising along with a 21-7 lead but then the Braves put on a furious finish that left both sides breathless. "That was some finish, we though we had them when we were up by two touchdowns but they came back. I guess people expect that from this rivalry though" .noted Viking coach Warren Hatch who still seemed a little dazed at the finish. AFTER THE Vikes had driven for their third touchdown of the night the Braves took over on their own 35 yard line with just over 3 minutes mi-nutes to play in the game. On second down Rob Faddis found Chris West for a long pass play and the Braves were in business at the Viking 33 yard line. A personal foul on the Vike moved the ball closer and then Faddis hit West with a perfect pass from 14 yards out and after Matt Bombard drilled the kick the Braves were down 21-14. Everyone knew the onsides kick was coming now, since there was only just over one minute to play, but the Braves worked it to perfection and came up with the football on the Viking 40 yard line. On first down Faddis hit Matt Shelly on a quick out pattern but Matt eluded a tackier and headed up field and made it to the 1 1 yard line before the Vikes could knock him out of bounds. NOW THE Braves had their chance to pull even. On first down Jeff Archibald sacked the passer for a nine yard loss, on second down Faddis hit tight end Todd Steinicke for a nine yard gain, then on third down the Vikes were called for pass interference giving the Braves a first and goal situation on the six yard line with 44 seconds left. On the next play though Faddis tried to hit West in the end zone but that's when Bagley stepped in front of West and intercepted on the one yard line. "Bagley made a great play on that one" offered Hatch, "he really had to come from a long way away to even get there. Just a great effort and play" he kept muttering. Then the Vikes ran out the clock. VIEWMONT got its first score the first time their offense touched the ball after Bevans came up with his first theft. On the Braves third play of the game it was Bevans who picked off a Faddis pass and returned it to the Braves 17 yard line. It took the Viking exactly three Shon Wilson running plays to get the six points, the final one from about 8 yards out. Senior Chris Beckman drilled the point and it was 7-0. The only other scoring threat in the first period came late when Rick Rose blocked a Viking punt on the Viking 37 yard line. The next seven plays the Braves featured the running run-ning of Spencer Zigich to move the ball down to the 14 yard line. There the drive stalled though as the Bountiful side went for the first down on a fourth and four situation only to see the pass fall incomplete near the end zone. BOUNTIFUL had the next scoring opportunity oppor-tunity when West returned a punt to the Viking 22 yard line but a holding penalty and a sack by Dave Mcintosh took care of that drive. Field position was the story the rest of the half as the Vikes were always pinned deep in their own territory on offense while their defense was playing a great game keeping the Braves off the board. The second half began just as the first half had with the Vikings scoring the first time they touched the ball. Viewmont began the drive with a couple of Shon Wilson runs, then a pass to Matt Bradshaw and another pass to Kirt Tidwell to put the ball on the Bountiful 39 yard line. Bountiful then didn't help matters as they were hit with two penalties moving the ball to the 15. There Jeff Meservy hit Wade Bevans in the end zone for the score and Beckman's foot made it 14-0. IT STAYED that way until the fourth period when Rick Rose intercepted a Meservy pass on the Viking 10 yard line. Four plays later Faddis found Steinicke and the mad finish was on. Bountiful tiied the onside kick but Timmy Jones recovered for the Vikes who then proceeded pro-ceeded to drive down field for another score with Wilson bulling over from the two. Beck-man Beck-man made it 21-7 setting up the dramatic final moments. THE WIN threw the region into a three way tie for third with Viewmont, Bountiful and Woods Cross who destroyed East, at 2-3. |
