Vikes Are Itching5 To Get At Hillcrest The Huskies have tallied some impressive stats this year. But Viewmont isn't over awed. "They're beatable like everybody else," says Hatch. By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports VIEWMONT Alter talking to some folks in the Salt Lake area one gets the impression that the Viking football team is wasting their time this week trying to take on Hillcrest. SEEMS THIS bunch of Huskies has put some impressive statistics up on the board. For starters they are the number three ranked team in the state. They have only lost one game this entire season, their first game of the year when several of their key players were still playing American Legion baseball. Then they went through their league action without ever getting get-ting a real test, on the average in region play the Huskies scored 33 points while only giving up 8. Even the Viking coaches have nothing but nice things to say about theiropponents, "they are a very talented team. They have good size and excellent team speed. Hillcrest executes well on offense and then they play good solid defense" admitted Viking head man Warren Hatch. THAT TELLS everyone a couple of thinus. either the Huskies are awesome and the Vikings Vik-ings will be wasting their time on Friday or they have played in a weak region and just haven't faced stiff competition. Although Hatch has high praise for the Huskies Hus-kies he does differ from some other people concerning this battle. "They do have some things that we feel we can capitilize on, we feel they are beatable just like every other team in the state." IF THERE is one player that the Vikings are leary of it would be senior Marty Haws of the Huskies. "He's the wide receiver that has speed to burn" admitted Hatch, "He won the state 100 yard dash last year so we know he is a big play man." To get the ball to Haws the Huskies like to air it out with senior Billy Robertson doing the throwing. Hillcrest will pass the ball, about 20 times each outing, but they also brag about their running attack. The Huskies have a big 200 pound fullback named Rob Hill and then a quick 5'8" halfback by the name of Randy Warner. These two can drive defenses batty with their inside then outside approach, add to that the threat of the pass and the Viking defense de-fense will have their hands full. LET'S START with the Viking defense. Affectionately called the Gestapo, since they have the SS (stinging smurfs) and they take no prisoners, the Vike defense has been a strong point of the club all season. The linebackers of this group are the heart and soul of the club with Troy Gortat, Dave Mcintosh, Shon Wilson and Brian Hardy being a good group of hitters. The passing of the Huskies will put some pressure on the secondary secon-dary of Tim Jones, Chad Rasmussen and Wade Bevans while John Stubbs, Mark Zesiger, Alan Hansen and Jeff Putnam will need to play well up front. OEFENSIVELY the Vikings will throw the ball, nothing new, so the smurf insurance agency agen-cy better get their protection together because word has it the Hillcrest front people are big and physicial. Given time Jeff Meservy has proven he can throw with anyone and then Shon Wilson, Wade Bevans, Lonny King and Kirt Tidwell give him some excellent targets to shoot for. Let's not kid anyone the Huskies are a fine football team and they will obviously be fvored by the Vikings are out to prove a couple of things. "We feel we are better than our record shows and we think we are a better club than Hillcrest things we are" admitted Hatch. "WE REALIZE we have to execute well on offense and then have our defense hold them a little for us to be in the game. Defensively they run a 5-2 defense like Clearfield and Skyline and we had success against them." In regards to the state playoffs Hatch has this outlook. "At this point in time everyone is even. To us there is no fourth place team or first place team just 16 teams trying for the state title. These are the playoffs and you just have to give it your best shot. They have to beat us to keep going in the tournament and we have to beat them to keep going." AT TIMES this season the Vikings have shown they can play football with anyone. A couple of weeks ago they gave the Davis club, ranked number two, a great game. Whenever someone tells this group of players that they can't win they seem to get mad. Well this is one of those games. The two will collide Friday at 3 p.m. on the Hillcrest field. |
