Show Centerville Council Endorses Youth Basketball By GARY R. BLODGETT CENTERVILLE - The Centerville City Council gave its endorsement to a youth basketball bas-ketball program, to be operated oper-ated privately without financial finan-cial aid from the city. THE COUNCIL gave preliminary pre-liminary approval to a proposal propos-al by Gail Smith to organize the Centerville Youth Basketball Association (CYBA) for the purpose of teaching boys and girls fundamental basketball. She told the council that there would be three leagues --comprised --comprised of youngsters in the third and fourth grades, fifth and sixth grades and seventh and eighth grades. Some ninth graders may also be included with the seventh and eighth graders. SHE EMPHASIZED that although the organization would carry the name "Youth Basketball Association." it would not be affiliated with a national organization known as the YBA (Youth Basketball Association." Mrs. Smith said a fee would be charged to pay for uniforms, uni-forms, referees and rent to use two schools, Centerville Junior High and J.P. Stewart Elementary School. "WE WANT TO be as professional pro-fessional as possible with top-notch top-notch instructors (coaches) and paid referees." she said. "The organization will be established with a board of directors and will follow the foremat of a similar program in southern California." Mayor Neil Blackburn said he had two boys in the city basketball bas-ketball program last year and it's a good experience for them. "I'm impressed with this proposal for a YBA program," prog-ram," he said. COUNCILMAN Dennis Knoles. who is laison for the council with the Recreation Department, noted that more than 200 youngsters participated partici-pated in last year's program and a program such as the one being presented "should be a booming success." He suggested that the city endorses the program -- without with-out any additional finance assistance - and support the association in the purchase of equipment and supplies through the credability of the city. |
