WMdlcaiis "MauaF9 Leopards By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports WOODS CROSS -- No one really knew for sure the reaction the Woods Cross football players would take following last week's contest con-test with Bountiful in which the Cats were soundly defeated. Well the Cats came roaring back and took care of East 39-6. THAT'S RIGHT folks we're talking 39 points against the same East defense which only gave up 14 to Davis and 7 to the Vikings. This was by far the most points scored on the Leopard defense all year. "I really don't know what they were thinking coming into the game" noted Larry Eldracher "but we moved the football on them pretty easily." The scoring parade began in the first period when Jeff Hawkins, who Eldracher praised as playing a great game, took off on a 26 yard scamper. The Cats suprised everyone with a two point conversion which saw Trent Sterling throw to Travis McBeth for a 8-0 advantage for the Cats. EAST ALMOST tied the score, at least got a touchdown, when a running back named Wolf-graham Wolf-graham broke loose and headed up field. "He outran our secondary but McBeth ran mm down from behind and tackled him at our 25 yard line. Then the defense held and they cam away empty. That was a big play for us and it swung things in our direction" admitted Eldracher. Woods Cross went on to score two more times in the second period on the passing arm of senior Mike Farner. First Farner hit Hawkins Haw-kins for a score from 12 yards out and then he hit McBeth for another six points from 19yards away. Mike Chabries kicked both extra points and the Cats had their 22 first half points. East did manage to get on the board on a pitch-pass play which covered some 64 yards. THE REST of the Wildcats scoring came in the third period and this time it was junior Ron Gomez who got into the act. First he scored on a 10 yard run and then he duplicated that effort later in the quarter. In between those two scoring scor-ing runs Chabries kicked a 25 yard field goal, he also booted both extra points. Meanwhile the Wildcat defense was holding the single wing attack of the Leopards in check with Trent Sterling leading the parade with two interceptions. "IT WAS GREAT to see the kids respond this week the way they did" admitted Eldracher, "some clubs might have given up on the season after what happened last week but these kids stuck in there and bounced back. I had a feeling all week we would do this but you never really know until gametime what is going to happen." East has always been a physical club but that didn't seem to bother the Wildcats as they were willing to go head to head with East. This was simply a case of Woods Cross being the better club on the night as they took out their frustrations of a week ago on the Leopards. GOING INTO THE game the Cats knew they had to win in order to still have a shot at the state tournament, something these seniors seem to want. With the victory they moved into a three way tie for third place, with View-mont View-mont and Bountiful. Only two of these three local sides can play in the state event and the way they played against each other it would be tough to pick a winner in each battle. "We knew going into the game with East that things could get a little complicated but the one thing we knew was that we had to win that game and as it turned out we needed the win." True words. Not only did the Cats need the win to stay in the playoff hunt but they also needed it for morale reasons. They got a big lift in that department. |
