Show Wade Bevans: Right Man In The Right Place Wade Bevans had one of those nights that defensive backs dream about last week as he intercepted four passes in helping his Viking club take a 21-14 victory over rival Bountiful. WADE CONTRIBUTES his success to three factors, "I think it was a combination of three things. First the scouting report and coaching we all got on defense really helped, secondly, I think I was in good position and played some good defense and then their quarterback quarter-back didn't have a great night passing or his receivers catching the ball." Truth is all three factors did play a role in Wades' success. There were times when the pass was high and then there were others when the ball simply went through a receivers hands. see BEVANS pg. 3 li - i !- , . ; I Km , s , 1 i " " 1 - , , t j 1 1 aeriSk " Ply Gr'P handS' WadC BcVa"S (20)' snalched four ent;,ny BEVANS... continued THE BIG factor was the scouting report and the v coverage the Viking coaches came up with. "The i;. coaches told us that the flood pass was their favorite V pass and that the quarterback liked to throw to the - tightend and that's who I was assigned to watch," he smiled. Head coach Warren Hatch explained the change in coverage, "usually when a team runs that flood route T. the outside linebacker rushes the quarterback. The de-'l' de-'l' fensive back then rolls up to cover the back. What we did was have the outside backer drop off and cover the Z.l runningback and then told our defensive backs to pick up the tightend." THE PLAN worked. ;1 Bountiful tried to run the flood pass on the opening r . play of the game and it was a sign of things to come. .,'S "That first play they ran it and the ball went straight .V through the tightends hands and hit me. I was so sur- prised I couldn't hang on to the ball" Wade joked. But j then three plays later the Braves tried the same pass and this time the likeable Bevans was ready. "It was the same route, I picked up the tightend and then saw the ball coming. I w as getting ready to hit him as the ball got there but then I saw the ball was high so I stayed right h where I was and caught the ball". I: WADE THEN had to w ait until just before the half to .: pick his second pass. "I saw the quarterback scramb-. . ling in the endzone while I was covering my deep third, I then he tried to throw deep and I simply stepped in front ; of the receiver and had the pick". His final two interceptions on the night both came in the third period and once again both of them came on the flood pass route. "My third one I could see the play J . coming right from the snap. Putnam put good pressure ; on their passer forcing him to throw quicker than he wanted to and I just stepped in front of the tightend and there was the ball. The other one the quarterback simp-: simp-: ly overthrew everyone and right into my arms.". WADE ACTUALLY picked off another pass but it : was nullified by a pass interference call on him, "yea, I NJI; interfered," he smiled, "we were both running and I : could see theball was going to be short so I pushed off a I little and then caught the ball". He also had another r sure interception in his own endzone but he knocked the ball to the ground, "Coach Johnson told all of us on ! fourth down to simply knock the ball down, we got the I ball on the 20 yard line so that's what I did". f When he isn't playing defensive back Wade is the Jyr halfback on offense for the Vikings and in this game he also caught a touchdown pass for the Vikes. "I guess it's funny in a way because it was a flood pass that I I scored on. As I went out on my route, I noticed the J. linebacker coming up to take me so I ran behind him like E I'm supposed to do. Jeff (Meservy the Viking quarterback) quarter-back) also saw it coming so he threw the ball up a little more and over the backers head and I simply ran under it for the score". AT 5'9" and 160 pounds Wade probably won't get looked at by many major colleges for football but he would love the opportunity to play some junior college ball, either football or baseball, and if he keeps having nights like last week there are bound to be some col- leges after him. |
