Show Scoliosis screening completed The Treasure Mountain Middle School has completed its annual scoliosis screening for the 5th and 7th grades, according to School Nurse Connie West. The three-hour screening was conducted by West and Dr. Donald Cofer of the Cofer Chiropractic Clinic. Scoliosis is an unnatural side bending of the spinal column which places abnormal stress on the spine, ribs and associated muscles. This . stress can result in backache, poor posture and possible organ disturbances. Scoliosis generally appears in children between the ages of 10 and 15 and is found predominantly in girls. Eighty percent of the disorder is idiopathic (of unknown causes) and if untreated can progress to a painful and disfiguring ailment. However, if treated in time, the progress of scoliosis can be halted. Therapy, braces and exercises have proved successful with scoliosis patients and surgery is used as a last resort in severe cases. Dr. Cofer urges all parents to consult with a medical or chiropractic physican if notified by the school of a scoliosis problem. |
