Show Parles Park Gazette is hot off the press by NAN CHALAT Record staff writer 1 Inside this issue of the Park Record readers will find a unique supplement the Parley's Park Gazette, a student newspaper produced by Betsy Bacon's fourth grade class at Parley's Park Elementary School. And although the staff members of the Park Record might like to take credit for the clever classifieds (Brother for sale), the original artwork and the light-hearted columns col-umns (Strike a Nerve), they can't. The kids did it all. The groundwork was laid last September, said Bacon. "Teri Gomes came to school and gave the students an overview of what a paper . involves." "She explained the differences between features, hard news, columns and editorials," she added. The students then invited local writers and photographers to talk about their specialties. Park Record cartoonist J.P. Max demonstrated ,the art of caricature, editor David Hampshire guided a group of students through a hard news story and photographer Nan Chalat suggested ways to illustrate their stories with photos. Local writer Hank Louis talked about sportswriting, and elementary school teacher Karen Bogue helped with the creative writing. "And every time we needed help, Teri was there," Bacon added. When the editorial material was finally assembled this spring the students then packed up their interviewes; advertisements, photos and feature stories and took them to Park Record Publisher Jan Wilking, who helped them to design the paper using the Record's graphics and darkroom departments. "The kids loved it! Now several of them want to be reporters," said Bacon. ' "And in some respects I think I enjoyed it even more than they did. I got to 'be the silent observer watching them work enthusiastical- iy- "The project sharpened their writing skills, enhanced their organizational organi-zational skills and taught them how work together," she added. Next year, Bacon said the students plan to do a radio show. "They want to learn how to be DJs." |
