Show (Cyclliiimg satfteity Give your bike a brake by MARIANNE CONE Record contributing writer This is the sixth in a series of articles on bicycle safety by Park City resident Marianne Cone. It is essential that a cyclist understand the operation of his bicycle particularly the brakes. In Park City, where travel is up and down hills, it is important to have a good set of brake pads. Caliper brakes must be centered. And if your coaster brakes are noisy, it may indicate a problem. Also, you should look for any obstruction that may get in between the spokes. If the spokes are loose, the strength of the wheel could be decreased. Tires should be properly inflated and the wheels should be firmly secured to the bike. When you buy a bike, be sure to get a good fit. Otherwise, controlling the bike will be difficult. The bicycle may sway from side to side or you may have an awkward reach to brakes and pedals from the seat. It would be helpful for you to know how to make simple repairs, like replacing a chain or changing a flat tire. You should carry a few; necessary tools, a spare inner tube i and a rag. You'll know what the rag is for the first time you replace the chain. " -' " ';7'""l.,0 t.!'i,i-VM 1:fo-1 'II IKHICliU 'Mill', ';( 'tn- n- t! . .
