Show Heber resident faces arraignment June 10 poo by DAVE ADLER Record staff writer Carl Schettler, a Heber City car dealer charged with two third-degree felonies, has been bound over to the Fourth District Court for arraignment arraign-ment on June 10. At a preliminary hearing Friday in the Eighth Circuit Court in Heber, Wasatch County Deputy Attorney Wendy Hufnagel presented sufficient suf-ficient evidence to persuade Judge Joseph Dimick that Schettler should be arraigned. Schettler has been charged with aggravated assault and , carrying a concealed dangerous weapon,' both felonies, and reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor. Each felony count carries with it a possible penalty of up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both. A misdemeanor is punishable by six months in jail, a $299 fine, or both. Schettler is accused of having brandished a firearm at a California truck driver, Richard Thompsen, who attempted to pass him on a two-lane highway near Heber on April 29. ' According to a report based on a deposition given by Thompsen and filed by Utah Highway Patrolman Paul Brown, Schettler tried to prevent a truck driven by Thompsen from passing his car while both were headed east toward Heber City on U.S. Highway 40. While allegedly harassing Thompsen Thomp-sen on the road, it was reported that Schettler also brandished a "large black automatic pistol" at the truck driver. After Schettler drove away, Thompsen radioed Officer Brown for assistance. A deputy with the Wasatch County sheriff's office, Steve Ridge, later stopped Schettler just outside the Hebor City limits. Schettler was removed from the car and a search of its contents located the weapon. At Friday's preliminary hearing, Hufnagel put three witnesses on the stand Thompsen, Brown and Ridge. Each witness recounted the events of April 29. Schettler did not respond. He will enter a plea at the arraignment, George Ballif will preside. |
