Show Seven local school board candidates are taking a close look at the job board also must plan new facilities to meet the educational needs of the district and provide transportation for students to and from the schools. The board in its budget-setting responsibility sets the salary scales for the teachers, principals, administrators adminis-trators and classified employees. The board also sets local property tax mill levys to supplement state and federal revenues for local educational education-al programs. This year the Park City school board voted to raise its teachers' base salaries 16.7 percent and to fund a new wing for the high school. According to Park City school superintendent Tony Mitchell the local school board members can do a lot more than rubber stamp policies to comply with state law. "Their key role is to set the tone and expectations of the school system. They exhibit the leadership and set the level of performance the school system will meet," he said. As an example Mitchell pointed out that three years ago the current school board decided to raise graduation requirements above the state minimum. "They can sit back and do nothing or they can, as this board has, take and aggressive role in changing the direction of the district." Park City board members currently current-ly receive $100 per month, which is the maximum compensation allowable allow-able under state law. They also may receive up to $500 in traveling expenses for conferences and trips relating to district business. Four of the five members of the Park City Board of Education will be up for reelection this November. Seven local residents have filed to run for those seats and each will be profiled in the Park Record preceding preced-ing the election. But first here is a profile of the job. v The system of local school boards is defined by the state constitution. According to Utah law each district ;: (except Salt Lake City) is divided into five wards with one representative to be selected from each ward. The representatives must be and remain residents of the ward in which they , are elected. School board members are elected for four-year terms. This year three nominees have filed for the seat currently held by Iindy Blackbourn. A primary election will t be held on August 21 for Blackbourn, " RoseMary Kelley and Ennis Gibbs. Two of the current board members '. who have filed to run again, Nancy McComb of Park Meadows and , Ralph Hale of Prospector Square, ' will be running unopposed in . November. In Old Town, Ed Axtell will be running against current board I president Gary Avise. ! , The primary legal responsibilities of the local school board include appointing a district superintendent and a clerk treasurer, approving an J annual budget and hiring all district I employees.
