Show Local golf tourneys aid American Cancer Society Local foursomes set out last Thursday on two local golf courses with more in mind than simply hitting dimpled balls down the fairways. They were also out to raise money for cancer research. Four women's foursomes made the rounds at the Park City Municipal Golf Course, while 10 men's foursomes did the same at the Park Meadows Country Club. According to Rebekah Struve, director of development for the Utah Division of the American Cancer Society, the women raised $320, while the men raised $1,300. Struve said the action was part of a statewide effort, 30 men's tournaments and 20 women's, to raise money on the golf course. The winners of the various tourneys now move on to the state finals next Monday at Jeremy Ranch for the women and at Park Meadows for the men. Struve said 32 foursomes will be at Jeremy, with 36 at Park Meadows. From there the winners will go to the national American Cancer Tournament at the Doral Country Club in Miami, Florida on October 25 and 26. The fundraising goal nationwide is $3 million, Struve said, $50,000 of that is expected from Utah. The team of Denise Vilven, Patti Wells, Helen Taft, and Carolyn Harris won the ladies' best ball event. Their handicapped score of 60 narrowly beat out Amy Schanfield, Maggie Reno, Nancy Brandon and Jamie Peters at 61. For the men it was the foursome of Dave Coleman, Richard Hock, Mike Klekas and Tom Christensen who led the predominantly Salt Lake field with a 57. Those two teams will now move on to the state finals. |
