Show Coconuts beat Penn West, Jans moves into first place -l 'r '-.v fVvv'V V -V..V- -v' '- ' 'i ' . : , i -1 -Vt c u , . by Kundy llanskat The playoff picture in men's Softball was further complicated this past week. The culprit was Coconuts, which beat Penn West Monday-night. Monday-night. That loss, coupled with two wins by Jans Mountain Outfitters, propelled the Outfitters into first place by one game over both Doc's and Penn West. Coconuts is one-and-a-half games out of first. Those four teams now head into the final four games of the season with numberous head-to-head confrontations. con-frontations. Any of those four has a good chance of making the three playoff spots. One dark-horse is Just Razor's Bums at 5-5. That team still has a chance to get in there if they can beat Jans Friday night. The women concluded their regular season Monday night. There is talk that one make-up game will be played next Monday night, but that is unclear at press time. Mark f Stemler's Janeaux's team went out i with a forfeit on its last four games, 1 including one Monday night against Just Amie's. Just Arnie's finished the year at a perfect 8-0. A respectable second was the Mad Hatter team at 5-3. Then came sneakers at 3-5, and Janeaux's at 0-8. There will be no women's playoffs again this year. You don't have to be a graduate of the Mike Osher School of Umpiring to call this one. End Run shortstop Billy Ross applied the perfect tag, but couldn't hang onto the ball. Game was played Monday on the high school field. The coed league is also coming to a close this week. The coed combatants play Thursday and Tuesday to finish the season. From then on the men hold center stage virtually every night of the week, heading into the playoffs beginning Aug. 10. Doc's 13, Ryan's 5 This game wasn't quite the blowout it was played up to be, but was an easy win for Doc's just the same. The real story was in the Ryan's cheering section, a group much like the Bleacher Creatures of many a baseball park. Early in the Wednesday night game last week the crowd took offense to the length of time it took Doc's left center fielder Vinnie Buonadonna to get into the batter's box. From that first bat Buonadonna was heckled, called "Donny" (in reference to Donny Osmond) and generally abused. Otherwise, the game was rather tedious, as Doc's scored eight in the first inning on hits by Rick Rodriguez, Scott Richards, and a host of others. Ryan's scored two runs in the first, but waited for their other three until their last shot in the seventh. Their cannons were underloaded under-loaded to knock off the Doc's team. Jans Mountain Outfitters 21, Deer Valley Lodging 5 Deer Valley started this game off hot, taking a 3-0 lead after the first inning in the Wednesday night game. But then Norm Smith, coach of Jans, told his cohorts that Deer Valley was finished with their hitting for the night. And although Lynn Burgener had a good night of three hits, Smith was basically right. Jans came up in the second with vengeance as Louie Leatham, Fred Marshall and Doug Whitney hit solid singles to add RBIs under their names. A total of nine Jans batters stepped up to the plate that inning, dumping in six runs. That was all that was basically needed, but the Outfitters kept up a thorough spraying of both line drives and homers to build up a big lead, and a big win. One medical footnote: Deer Valley's usual third baseman, Miek Osher, still recovering from gall bladder surgery, made an entrance into the game after one of the Deer Valley players pulled a muscle, but to everyone's surprise he did not open up his cut. Coconuts 8, Just Razor's Bums 7 The Coconuts started this game off quickly on hits by Kevin Long, Jeff Richards, Mark Elliot and Paul Lamphier. Five runs scored in the bottom of the first made it 5-0 Coconuts. Meanwhile, the Bums' bats were in a slumber any insomnia would envy. Finally their bats woke up in the fourth as one run crossed the plate. Then in the fifth a single by Ron Bacco with the bases loaded brought in two. A total of five were scored, along with one in the sixth. Going into the top of the seventh it was 8-7 Coconuts. In the seventh Buddy Macchia started it off right with a single, but was picked off trying to take two on a throw from Coconuts pitcher Jack Turner. That was it for the Bum momentum, and they marched home mum. Penn West 13, Deer Valley 10 Penn West started 'off Friday night on the right bat, so to speak. A series of six hits, combined with two Deer Valley errors, brought home five runs in the bottom of the first. Deer Valley got two hits in the second, but couldn't bring any home. Finally in the third they woke up on hits by Lynn Burgener and Gary Kilgore and a homer by Lew Berry. But Penn West capitalized on errors by all four Deer Valley outfielders and one by the pitcher to score five on only two hits in their half of the third. Score 11-3. Deer Valley closed the gap, but those five errors in one inning spelled the end 13-10. P.C. Accommodations 16, End Run 3 The Accommodations team had an eight-hit first inning to set the pace in this Friday night game at the high school. Those eight hits, coupled with one End Run error crossed i seven runs, and it was downhill from there, as the Accommodations crew again showed just how hot and cold they can be. 16-3. Doc's wins by forfeit over P.C.M.C. Jans Mountain Outfitters 18, Ryan's 2 This game was the final contest Friday night at City Park, and after the first inning rain threatened. At that point the score was 2-1 Jans. Then in the second Tim Lee, Gary Holland and Louie Leatham scored to push the tally to 5-1 . The third inning was a fine one for the bats of the Outfitters, as a total of 17 batsmen took a shot. Accents were provided on homers by Norm Smith and Randall Hanskat, plus a triple by Holland, and doubles by Leatham, Val Provencio, Smith, Doug Whitney and Lee. Twelve hits, 13 runs. The rain then came to mercifully end it for the Ryan's squad who said they would have much more fun drinking a few brews back at the homefront. Just Arnie's wins by forfeit over Janeaux's Coconuts 14, Penn West 9 This Monday night game started in scary fashion for the Coconuts. They watched as Scott Vultaggio, Sam Circo, Chuck Folkerth, Ross Bampton and Tom Bahan slammed solid line-drive singles through holes in the Coconut defense, scoring four runs in the top of the first. When the Coconuts got their chance it was no chance as Phil Congino grounded to the pitcher, Kevin Long did the same to the shortstop and Jeff Richards flied to left. It was more of the same in the second, with none crossing the plate. But after the first the Penn West bats died and they could only manage one run until the seventh. The Coconuts bats woke up, however, for three in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to make it 9-5. In the top of the seventh the Coconuts on a single by Mark Elliot, a single by Scott Siemon and a double by Paul Lamphier, added five more to make it 14-5 going into the bottom of the inning. Folkerth, Bampton, Roger Olsen and Eddie Jones mashed hits in the last ditch effort, but only four could cross the plate. Too little, too late. Just Razor's Rums 9, P.C. Accommodations 1 This 7 :30 game at the high school Monday night pitted the two teams in the league which could boast they can be the hottest and the coldest at different times against different teams. The Bums, for instance, beat Penn West last week, but lost to the End Run two weeks before that. Dan Maddson and Dave Howard teamed up to bring in two runs in the first for P.C. Accommodations; the Bums could manage only one. But in the second Bill Ross and Rick Sharp slapped homers to put the bums ahead for good. It went to 6-4 after four, and although P.C. Accommodations threatened in the bottom of the seventh, only two runs crossed the plate and the score ended up 9-7 Bums. The win kept the Bums alive in the playoff picture. Mad Hatters 23, Sneakers 18 The Sneakers team opened up this game looking for a blowout Monday night at City Park. Martha Hauser slammed a homer over center field which would have made Henry Aaron proud. That first showing prompted a four-run inning for Sneakers. But in the second inning the bottom of the Hatters line-up came through in a big way, led by Pam Hart. The bottom four hitters ended up scoring 13 of the 23 Hatter homers. Hart had a super-human game: a homer in her first at bat, a double in her second, a single in her third, a single in her fourth and a grand-slam mash to round it out on her fifth at bat. Sneakers was way down going into the top of the seventh, but got close on homers by Maggie Reno and Annette Anderson. Still, close only counts in hand grenades, as they went down to defeat. mmmmmtmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm |
