Show Hollywood's Golden Age comes to Symphony Hall July 27 The Utah Symphony, with guest conductor Elmer Bernstein, will present its fourth pops concert of the season July 27-28 in a program of classic movie scores. It will include two world premieres and a pair of internationally known pianists and culminate in a two-day recording session. On hand for the premieres will be Miklos Rozsa, composer of "Spellbound" "Spell-bound" Concerto Fantasy for Two Pianofortes and Orchestra, and New England Concerto for Two Pianofortes Piano-fortes and Orchestra which will be performed for the first time by a major orchestra. Movie buffs will remember the '.'Spellbound" Concerto Con-certo from Hitchcock's movie of the same name. Other program selections include Elmer Bernstein's Overture to "The Ten Commandments," Five Days One Summer, "The Magnificent Seven," and Tama from "Heavy Metal." Additional Rozsa compositions include "The World, The Flesh, and the Devil" Overture, and the "Because of Him" Overture. Other selections include Korn-gold's Korn-gold's "March of the Merry Men" and The Battle from "The Adventures Adven-tures of Robin Hood," which the Utah Symphony has recorded, and Webb's "Notorious." Bernstein is best known for his . compositions in various media, for which he has been honored by nine nominations for the Academy Award, the award itself, an Emmy, two Golden Globe Awards, the Western Heritage Award and a Tony nomination. Having written music for approximately approx-imately 80 films, his most profound impact on the art of motion picture scoring came with the score for "The " Man with the Golden Arm," which he liberally infused with jazz feeling, thus opening the door to whole generation of new composers. Rozsa was born in Budapest in 1907 and the Leipzig Conservatory. In Paris he composed "Theme . Variations and Finale," his first international success. His work on "The Thief of Baghdad" took him to . Hollywood in 1940, where he worked : on many films, including Hitchcock's "Spellbound" and Wyler's "Ben Hur." Duo-pianists Joshua Pierce and Dorthy Jonas have enjoyed worldwide world-wide success. Pierce, a student of Victor Babin, Dora Zaslovsky, and Artur Balsam, was a scholarship student at the Manhattan School of Music. He was the recipient of four Heckshire Foundation Awards and while at Cleveland he received the prestigious Victor Babin Award. Jonas, considering a prodigy at age nine when she was presented in recital by the Tuesday Musical Club in San Antonio, Texas, has won many competitions includign the National Piano Tournament and the coveted Anna Hertzberg Award. She ; is a graduate of the Juilliard School. : The pianists recently recorded an ' . album containing the Concert on E-flat K. 365 by Mozart with the L'Orchestra da Camara de Roma. Another album was nominated for a Grammy. The Utah Symphony will record several selections from the July 27-28 program for the Varese Sarabande label on July 30-31.
