Show Over-The-Line tourney comes to Park City this weekend by Randy llanskat Let's invent a hypothetical situation situa-tion for this weekend. The Russians are tired of the Detroit Tigers mangling the competition in the American League East, so they decide to put an end to it and push the button. Missiles, neutron bombs, the works: The end of the world as we know it. Now, would you want to go out lying ly-ing on the couch watching Howard Cosell blab on Sportsbeat? Or eating a Spam sandwich in your kitchen? Would you want to go out in such an unappealing, boring way? NOOOOO! So you better sign up for the Over-the-Line Tournament this weekend at City Park, because you never know just how long the Ruskies can put up with the Tigers winning all the time. All it takes is $10 per person for each three-person (including at least one woman) team. There is room for only 32 teams in the two-day tourney, so don't delay. For your $10 you get a T-shirt and at least two games, more it you can' win. Here are a few of the rules for those not in the know: Women can wear gloves, men can't. A mushy softball is used. The field starts with a 60-foot line. From one side of the line a triangle drawn, with the batting done where the lines intersect. On the other side of the line the boundaries extend straight out. The ball when hit must go over the line, between the extended boundary lines. A ball falling in front of the line is an out; two foul balls hitting outside the boundaries is an out; one strike (two for women) or a ball caught on the fly is an out. Three hits in a row score a run. and a home run is a ball hit beyond the last man in the field. There's more, but that's for you to find out. Prizes will be awarded for "most fun team," "best team name," and first, second and third places. Call the Recreation Department Depart-ment at 649-9461 to sign up. |
