By the end of the year the numbered markers will act as signposts to a self-guided tour of Park City. This week's centennial site is the St. John's Lutheran Church. St. John's Lutheran Church was organized in 1902 by Reverend O.H. Elmquist. Charter members included includ-ed nine native Swedes and 22 Finns. Services were conducted in Swedish and Finnish until 1920, when English was introduced. This church was constructed in 1907 by Pastor Elmquist, who was a master carpenter, with the help of congregation members and friends. When it was finished the Park Record reported that "no other congregation in this city has been able to build, furnish and dedicate a church in 90 days without a dollar's debt." Since the congregation had no resident minister, services were held only once a month. A room in the rear of the church was used to lodge pastors from Ogden and Salt Lake City who came to preach at St. John's. Regular services were discontinued discontin-ued in the 1940s, and the church was abandoned. Restoration began in 1973, when the building was purchased by John and Nicki Price. The Prices lived next door in the Raddon house, which they also restored. Subsequent owner Marion Lintner changed the back room and sanctuary into bedrooms, thus converting the structure to a year-round residence. 5 n 1 - NM tZZZ - SKV vv c ! - lvIti v!I- IT '&Ivk ttf 'r;n v- Z 'V'r j - - z Wv "tt J v--Hte ,f Jin ,il mil I i " W rflf" - - ; "., .".? : photo by Christopher Smart |
