Show New tennis court construction scheduled for City Council action by Christopher Smart The Park City Council is scheduled to award $77,976 to John Edmond for the construction of two new tennis courts at City Park. The courts will be the initial phase of the park's renovation. According to Jennifer Harrington of the city's planning department, the new tennis courts will be built at the north end of the park. An access road to the courts is included in the contract. The overall City Park plan calls for the relocation of the rugby and softball fields, Harrington said. According to the renovation plan, the rugby field will be changed so that it runs north and south rather than east-west. The softball field will be moved to a location south of its present one. Relocating the two fields will cost the city about $160,000, Harrington estimated. Since the rugby season- runs until mid-September, that work will have to wait until autumn. Moving the fields will require tearing down the old restroom and storage facilities at City Park, Harrington explained. A new recreation storage area and restrooms will later be built, she added. It is not known at this time whether the Recreation Department will move its headquarters to City Park from the Memorial Building. If so, the City Council would have to allocate funds in next year's Capital Improvements Budget, she said. The third contract to be let this year for City Park imprevements is for lighting of the softball and rugby fields, according to the plan. Harrington said that work must wait for the fields to be moved, but should be completed before winter. Other long range plans for City Park include a bike path to Old Town, a picnic pavilion south of the Park City Library ( Miners Hospital ) and a cross-country ski track on the 22-acres that surround the library. |
