Show Pacing the shot by Bob McBroom, head tennis pro, Park Meadows Racquet Club Dynamics are an important part of everyone's tennis game. More specifically, changing the pace of the ball on each return is something to strive for. In every tough match Tve played, my opponent has had the ability to quicken or ease the speed of the ball intentionally. This can be an effective skill in match play. When you play an opponent who begins to dominate the game, make an effort to change the pace of each shot you return. As a result, your opponent will be unable to gain a comfortable rhythm and will not be able to predict what type of shot the next one will be. Essentially you'll catch and keep your opponent off balance. Try the following drills to change the pace of your game: 1. Hit one soft, one hard and one medium serve alternately. 2. Practice hitting soft, hard and medium returns, along with a few lobs, on both the backhand and forehand sides. 3. Return your opponent's serve at a different pace-one slice, one firm, etc. 4. Volley at the net, one hard and then one drop volley. |
