IaJ -1 This schematic map of Deer Valley Resort shows the new Mayflower lift (far left) which opens up the Mayflower Bowl and 61 acres of skiing on seven new runs. Two new chairlifts increase Deer Valley skiing by one-fourth Two new chairlifts were installed last week at Deer Valley opening up Mayflower Bowl and increasing the area's skiing by 25 percent. According to Deer Valley spokesman spokes-man Russ Veenerna, the two lifts costing $2.4 million were placed by helicopter last week. The new Clipper lift will run from the Snow Park Lodge to the Silver Lake Lodge, paralleling the existing Carpenter lift. And the new Mayflower lift will open up the eastern reaches of Bald Mountain to skiing making available seven new runs in the Mayflower area. Veenerna said the Mayflower lift will add 61 acres of intermediate and advanced skiing to the Deer Valley Resort bringing its total skiable terrain to 290 acres. From the top of the Mayflower lift, Veenerna said, 1500 vertical feet of snow awaits skiers as they glide to the bottom of Bald Mountain's backside. From the top of the Sultan lift, he added, a skier can schuss, non-stop, 2,000 vertical feet to the bottom of Mayflower. Deer Valley has also been making some changes on existing runs, Veenerna said. Among those is the lengthening of the Sunset run, which will now extend all the way to Edgar's Cabin. Another slope off the Homestake chairlift, the Emerald Run, has been widened, Veenerna explained, to diminish congestion there. In addition, Deer Valley's race course will be moved from the Little Kate run, west of the Carpenter lift, to Little Reb on the lower slopes of Bald Mountain near Silver Lake Lodge. Not only will the race course increase in length, Veenerna added, it will be more enjoyable for spectators at McHenry's Beach in front of the Silver Lake Lodge. Beyond adding lifts and modifying runs, Deer Valley is in the process of expanding the Silver Lake Lodge. The lodge, damaged in a fine last May, is being rebuilt. The construc tion of the lodge is on schedule, Veenerna said. Included in that work is the addition of a new room to the east of the cafeteria that will have a seating capacity of 150 people. It can double as a meeting room, he added. Deer Valley's 1984-85 season will run from Dec. 8 to April 7. Full-day passes for the coming season are $28. Coupon books geared for locals will be available, Veenerna said. A book of 10 coupons will sell for $200. And for the first time Deer Valley will offer season passes, according to Veenerna. The passes, which are packaged for a family, are priced as follows: $650 for the first season adult pass in the family and $550 for additional adult passes. Children under 16 can purchase a season pass for $275 if at least one adult in the family has also purchased a season pass. All season-pass purchases include lockers and ski storage. The passes will be limited in number, although Deer Valley has not yet set that limit. |
