Show HOME GUARDS TO HAVE I .. A REGIMENT, ARMS AND ' AMMUNITION SUPPLIED Ton or twelve public-spirited citizens, citi-zens, some of whom are prominent in business and society, volunteered a day's work and started out bright and early this morning with enrollment lists, recruiting for the Ogden home guard Success was reported by all of them. In two or three days, Judge Charles C. Richards said, the guard will have a membership of at least five hundred. The main purpose of tho organization organiza-tion is to protect tho city during tho absence of the volunteer national guard. The members will be real minute men, ready to respond to a call at any time, day or night. The guard will be organized In regimental regi-mental formation, with officers and all necessary equipment No one has been nominated yet for official position, and the gratifying fact appeared today, Judge Richards said, that all of the volunteers, like himself, had the common com-mon desire to serve for the public good in the rank of high private. The first drill will be held next Wednesday Wed-nesday night in tho armory. Only the members will attend; no slackers allowed as critical observers. Plans for the regiment, tho first drill and other matters of Importance were made last night by tho committee commit-tee in a meeting at public safety headquarters, head-quarters, room No. G, Utah National bank building. Among those attending were: Judge Charles C. Richards, general gen-eral chairman of the safety organization; organiza-tion; Charles H. Barton, captain of the recruiting committee; Heber Scow-croft, Scow-croft, Jr., A. Mark Smith, Albert W, Hadley, M. James Cleary, George Wardlaw, Henry A. Dixon, Robert E, Wilson, Malcolm Watson. George Ab bott, Fred M. Nye, James Vellinga, Jack Way, John M. Kinard, Harry Newman and Roswell Belnap. Others, having pressing engagements, were represented by proxy. Arms and Ammunition. The guard will be of regimental size. Every member will have arms and ammunition for emergency use. Certain Cer-tain necessary authority will probably be conferred upon the guard, which will have the direction, to some extent, ex-tent, of the war department. The men doing tho enrollment work reported this afternoon that everybody desired to join, which enables the committee com-mittee to make a careful selection of vigorous men of action. Many former soldiers have enrolled and some of them served as officers or drillmasters in the army or navy. The guard will probably elect a colonel col-onel by popular vote, six or eight captains cap-tains and the required number of sergeants, ser-geants, corporals and other officers. Tho guard also will bo thoroughly drilled in the manual of arms and on a certain occasion in the near future the people will see a demonstration of marchers on Washington avenue that will be calculated to open everybody's eyes. The boys scouts, in a body, will serve loyally ns aides, under direction of Scoutmaster Robert Wilson. A number num-ber of manly young scouts visited the office of General Chairman Richards today and tendered their services as messengers and aides of any kind. The lads said their organization wasn't military in character, but that they were instructed by Scoutmaster Wilson Wil-son concerning tho high duty of rendering ren-dering patriotic service of every kind These boys In appearance emphasized the fact tnat "there's a difference" between be-tween a boy scout and the boy who has not received the advantage of scout training. Judge Richards noted this difference and he and others found pleasure in talking with the scouts. They were manly and clean in appearance, earnest ear-nest of speech, courteous and kindly, erect and enorgotic, "young minute men," as Judge Richards named them The red trail bicvelo corps of tho scouts, the signal corps of twenty-two members, tho first aid corps and other units will ho used to great advantage by tho homo guard. Tho boys are scattered all over the city, making them Ideal "oyes and ears" of the guai'd. Captain John D. Murphy, who started start-ed tho work of recruiting the home guard, has boon relieved of that work to enable him to assist Judge J. A. Howell recruiting for the armv and navy. Heavy Enlistment.
