Show I CAUSE OF MORS r TOLD AT CLINIC, I Discovery of Serum That May , ' Cure Malignant Growths Forecast. 1 PHILADELPHIA, April 14. The knowledge of the causo of tumors and the discovery of a counteractive serum was foreshadowed at the meet, ing here last night of the American Philosophical Society, Erwin F. Smith of the Bureau of Plant Industry of the United States Department of Agrl- culture, gave details of experiments ' made to determine the cause and pos- sible cure of the malignant growths. I From an analysis of parasites known to cauBe plant tumors, Mr. ' Smith deblared, it was discovered that ; they contained large quanties of am monia, acetic acid and other chemi-I chemi-I cals which when induced into a plant tf would cause a tumorous growth. He asserted that by a continuance of these experiments it is hoped that the cause of tumors in man may be learned and that a serum to combat the growths may be developed. Prof. Ferree said that shielding ' the light would be better for the i vision than shielding the eyes. |
