Show WILL BLAZE TRAILS FOB COAST CLUB Planning an itinerary for an overland over-land caravan to adopt is not as simple sim-ple as might be thought, Is the experience experi-ence of the San Francisco Advertising Advertis-ing club's "On to St, Louis" committee, commit-tee, which has the arrangements of tho schedule in hand. When this committee some weeks ago announced a route from San Francisco Fran-cisco via Truckee, Cal., Reno, Lovelock, Love-lock, Winnemucca, Montcllo, Elko, Og-den, Og-den, Salt Lake, Grand Junction, Denver, Den-ver, Kansas City, to SL Louis, a storm of protest arose from towns that were not on this designated route. So emphatic were their protests and claims that the entire route matter was reconsidered, without the committee commit-tee coming to any new decision. The chief objection from the route through the Southern Rockies was that it had not been tried out, consequently there was a doubt that it might be in perfect per-fect condition. The grades across the continental divide also were complained complain-ed of. The matter apparently has reached an impasse. The Advertising club's caravan, which will bo an epoch-making tour for California, leaves San Francisco on May 20. A decision quickly must be made. Army officers are expected to accompany the tourists tour-ists to inspect the road and the schedule sched-ule of running, which requires an average av-erage of 200 miles per day, is so tight as not to allow of any delays once the caravan starts. The suggestion according has been made by Claude McGee of the Howard How-ard Automobile company, representative representa-tive of tho Buick on the coast, to send a car from San Francisco on May 1 to make the trip east over one of tho disputed roads, returning via the other. oth-er. This car should be back In San Francisco May 16. The Ad club caravan of twenty cars and a one and half ton motor truck will go over this route across the high Sierras and Rockies two months before be-fore tho roads avowedly are open. Should McGee cross on May 1 he will establish a record for his crossing will be three months earlier than it ever has been made before. Ho claims to know a road which is open at this time and over which the trip can be made as early as May. Should the plan of McGee go through he, with a companion, likely will leave San Francisco on the night of April 30, -which has been designated designat-ed Advertising day. The car will be officially started at the big ad-fiesta which the Ad club is holding that night in the Exposition auditorium, and will run over the proposed new Lincoln highway across northern Nevada to Salt Lake, thence going south over the Midland trail route to Denver. Tho return trip from Denver will be planned over the Lincoln highway through Cheyenne, Laramie, Green River and into Ogden. Snow was reported re-ported in this region last week as ten feet deep in some places. The report of McGee after his Hying round trip will be accepted by the Ad club pilgrims pil-grims as final and that will be the road established as the through road, from San Francisco, as they blaze their way eastward. -nn |
