I At the tunnel in question the guard I is under the charge of a commissioned . officer. Several days ago the officer I is said to have reported the discovery of 119 sticks of dynamite which had been placed on top of the tunnel in a crevice, near the portal. A fuse was , attached, and it had evidently been sot off, but it had snuffed out before reaching the cap From appearances it had been placed there several weeks ago. The shooting occurred near the middle of the tunnel. A private who was on duty at the east portal is said to have seen a light in the tunnel and to have heard a noise. He reported to the corporal, and tho latter, with five men, went in to investigate. The corporal cor-poral was in the lead of his men, and suddenly the assailant opened fire. Two of the shots struck the corporal in the left leg and he fell. He rose to his feet again, when a third shot struck him in the right leg and he fell again. Several shots were fired by the guards in the direction of the assailant. as-sailant. When the corporal fell the second lime he' was picked up by his men and carried to the portal of the tunnel, and soon afterward he was placed on board a passing train and brought here for medical treatment." |
