Show SCHOOL BOARD FIXES DATE TOR BOND ELECTION City Commissioners Miles L, Jones and Christian Flygare last night appealed ap-pealed to the city board of education to submit the $200,000 school bonds issue and tho city commission's three bond issues at the same election on April 26, but tho board unanimously refused tho appeal for tho reason that thirty days' notice is required to validate vali-date a city bond election, and only ten days' notice is required for a school bond election. The "city dads" argued that the school bonds and the city commission's commis-sion's three bond issues aro for the same general purposo, namely, the preservation of the public health, but the school board declined to sustain the argument, because of tho legal notice requirements. Acquiescence in tho city commission's commis-sion's plan would have deferred the election until May 14, for the law requires re-quires thirty days' notice of all city bond elections and only ten days for school bond elections. April 26 was approved tis the date for the school bond olection. The plan of submitting all tho bond issues at the same election "was designed de-signed by Mayor Abbot R. Heywood, with the concurrence of Commissioners Commission-ers Jones and Flygare. They were apparently ap-parently not advised of tho legal requirements. re-quirements. The Good Government league has called a mass meeting for next Tuesday Tues-day night in the court house for the purpose of planning co-operative efforts ef-forts for the succoss of the school bonds issue and discussing every phase of the city commission's three or four bond Issues. Tho commission's three proposals are as follows $300,000 in twenty-year bonds for tho Third ward sewer; ?100,-000 ?100,-000 in bonds to pay the 1915 warrants of the Fell administration, now held principally by the banks apd drawing 6 per cent Interest, and $50,000 to pay for the paving of street intersections In the mayor's several paving projects. The argument in favor of the sewer bonds is that the entire sewer system needs overhauling and extension. The argument for the warrant bonds is that the bond issue will save money to the taxpayers. |
