PANIC IS CAUSE OF DEATHS portland ore august 6 owing to a want of presence of mind in all but one of twenty occupants of a launch which had collided with a rowboat two of the three occupants of the rowboat drowned within a dozen feet of tha launch the drowned were fred aged 20 and his sister madeline aged 16 the launch and the rowboat were traveling along the river in front of the city after dark tonight in opposite directions the captain of the launch tailed to see the rowboat which carried no light and the launch hit the smaller boat one man seized the third occupant of the boat miss lle and dragged her aboard tha others on the launch were so excited that they allowed the boat to drift aay without attempting a rescue the to left in the rowboat had mccoms frenzied with fear nad their actions capsized the boat after struggling helplessly for a few moments they drowned in plain sight of the then powerless people on the launch
