Show MASKED MEM BOARD TWENTY SECOND STREET CAR two shots are at conductor at corner of van buren and robbers flee from fridays standard one of the anost daring holdups hold ups in the cites history was attempted shortly after nine last evening at the corner of and van buren when two masked men boarded a twenty second streetcar and ordered T W butcher the motorman to throw up his hands two shots were fired by the highwaymen but no damage was done butcher was seen shortly after the affair by a representative of this paper and stated that he had just finished a trip east on twenty second street and was just arf the act of passing to ahe rear of the car in order 10 change be trolley when two masked men boarded afie car one remained on the rear platform and the other entered the car facing butcher at about the center of the car one pointed a pistol at butchers face and at the same time commanded him to throw up his hands 1 I thought it was some one trying to play a jole on me said tho motorman and I 1 merely laughed at his command I 1 did not put my hands up and the gelloa uttered an oath and said 1 I mean it no sooner had he ut alered these words than he fired his pistol twice directly at me whether the fellow was excited or did it intentionally tio nally I 1 do not know but the first bullet entered the belling of the car near the center light and the other passed through the end of the car near the top the first shot said butcher came so close to my head as to knock c cap off and the powder flew into my eyes both men took to their heels niter the shots were fired and I 1 ran titter them but was unable to overtake them A number of people residing in that neighborhood were sealed on their cawns and porches and when the shots were fired the women screamed and ne men went in pursuit of the robbers for a time it looked as it the man who handled the gun would be overtaken but he finally scaled a lence and outdistanced his pursuers some of the residents notified the police station and four officers were detailed on the case going to the scene on a special car A thorough search of the neighborhood failed to locate the highwaymen mr butcher however was able to give the police a good description of the men and sated that he would be able to recognize the fellow that made the gun play one of the residents who witnessed the affair also stated that he would be able to identify the man whom the bolic nolic expect to be able to apprehend according to butchers story he did not become frightened until the whole thing was over he stated that the man who came ino the car and did talking was e a young man with dark eyes he had a red handkerchief over the lower part cf bis face and was in his shirt sleeves ho wore a light soft hat a light shirt with a dark stripe and dark trousers the bullet holes in tho car look as though made by a 32 or 38 caliber revolver the tact that butcher was not shot is probably due to the poor aim of the man handling the gun |
