POLICE PUT SUPPOSED CROOKS BEHIND BARS suspicious characters are being rounded up toa protect circus goers the local poh ce last evening made a round up 0 hobles hoboes ho boes that have re congregated in this vicinity among whom are supposed to be a number of crooks who came to town in advance of the barnum bailey circus with the result that about a dozen supposed knights ot the road were quartered at the city jail last night they will spend circus day behind the bars late yesterday afternoon word reached the police that a gang of tramps that had collected in the brush pear the river and practically a young man who had been bathing in the stream the patrol wagon aas dispatched to the scene having on board a number of officers the gang saw the approach of the officers and by running away escaped the clutches of the law so hurried was their depasture dep sture that they estt several of their coats behind A dress suit case also figured in the stuff recovered sy the police at the camp the young man in question stated to ibe officer that the gang had induced him to accompany the irto their camp and there they imparted to him tha information that they were going to take bilm to california with them where he would have an opportunity to make a great amount of money the arrival of the police spoiled their plans in this particular direction suspicious characters were picked up by ahe police at intervals all evening long until there was quite a motley collection at the city jail in each case with one a charge of vagrancy was placed opposite their names on the police blotter The exception was a man who gave bis name as V C allson and aho was up by officer malone early last evening upon a description furnished by tho department the supposition is that allson a bad one and be will receive a thorough shaking down by the authorities the extra force of police specially put on for today is expected to ba fully capable of handling pickpockets pick pockets and thieves that usually follow a circus but the department Is taking no chances with any of those who look in any way suspicious
